The Expressway 25 is an expressway in South Korea . The highway is a north-south route in the southwest half of the country, from Suncheon on the south coast to Gwangju in the north and west along Daejeon to Cheonan . The motorway is a total of 275 kilometers.

Street description

South South Korea

West of Suncheon , both Expressway 25 and Expressway 10 start at the Suncheon-West junction. Expressway 10 runs east to Busan and Expressway 25 runs north-west. The highway has 2 × 2 lanes and runs through a fairly sparsely populated mountainous and wooded area. A little further west, Expressway 25 turns further north to the region around Gwangju where it runs west again. Gwangju is a city of 1.4 million people. On the east side of Gwangju, the expressway 253 is crossed, which takes over the through traffic in the direction of Gochang . Expressway 253 is a shorter route to the rest of Expressway 25 which runs around Gwangju.

Region around Gwangju

On the east side of Gwangju is an intersection with Expressway 12 , which starts here and heads east. The highway then runs through the north of Gwangju and has only 2 × 2 lanes, despite the size of the city. On the east and west side there is a connection with Route 77 , the ring road from Gwangju. The motorway then turns north and after the toll booth there is a short section with 2 × 3 lanes.

Southwest South Korea

North of Gwangju you come through very mountainous area and there follows a junction with the expressway 253. The highway follows a river bed in the north and has a number of tunnels here. Further north you come through a relatively large coastal plain. However, there are no large cities on the route, only regional cities such as Wanju and Jeonju . In Jeonju there is an intersection with Expressway 20 , which runs east. South of Nonsan is Expressway 251 crossed, further extends in the direction of the northeast.

Western South Korea

Expressway 25 follows a westerly route northwest along west of Daejeon . The motorway leads a little further through the coastal plain and a mountainous area with forest. In Gongju there is a junction with expressway 30 . The highway follows the river bed to the north with a few tunnels. The highway ends on Expressway 1 on the south side of Cheonan . The South Korean capital Seoul is then only 90 kilometers to the north.

history

Honam Expressway

In April 1970 construction began between Daejeon and Jeonju , which is half the distance between Gwangju and Daejeon. On December 30, 1970, the first part of Expressway 25 opened with one carriageway. On January 10, 1972, the rest of the southern part between Suncheon and Jeonju began to be built, which was opened to traffic on November 14, 1973. In December 1985 the part from Jeonju to Nonsan was opened with the second lane, thus the construction of the Honam Expressway is completed. Originally, Expressway 25 ran from Suncheon to Daejeon, but the section between Nonsan and Daejeon was renumbered in 2001 and is now Expressway 251 . In 2005, a section between Jeonju and Nonsan was expanded with 2 × 3 lanes and completed on October 27, 2010.

Cheonan-Nonsan Expressway

Construction of the northern part of Expressway 25 began much later because through traffic from Gwangju to Seoul was via Daejeon. In the 1990s, more and more city bypasses were built. Expressway 25 was one of them and was approved on July 1, 1996. On December 23, 2002 the motorway opened to traffic.
