Falkenstein is a district of the city of Ludwigsstadt in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria .

geography

The wasteland of Falkenstein lies in the deeply cut valley of the Loquitz and is surrounded on all sides by forest. There the Steinbach flows into the Loquitz as a right tributary. The forest area adjacent to the west is the Falkenstein and Pechleite nature reserve east of Lauenstein . The federal road 85 leads to Probstzella (1.8 km northwest) or past the Fischbachsmühle to Lauenstein (1.8 km southwest). A communal road leads to Steinbach an der Haide to the district road KC 26 (2 km southeast).

history

In 1709 a brewery was founded on the site of today's Falkenstein. With the construction of the iron hammers , Falkenstein was created in 1765. The iron hammer mill experienced its heyday in the first half of the 18th century. Falkenstein became a popular destination very early on. Between 1821 and 1825 there was a pub with a beer garden and bowling alley. In 1870 the iron hammer mill was closed. The local excursion restaurant and the brewery were expanded. Falkenstein experienced its boom and the beginning of the heyday as an excursion destination from 1885 with the opening of the Eichicht - Stockheim railway line . In 1885 the Falkensteingemeinde was founded, an association of well-known personalities from the area who have chosen the hamlet for social gatherings. In 1809 the Schreider family from the Fichtelgebirge bought the ironworks and brought it to an economic climax.

The division of Germany triggered the economic decline of Falkenstein. Before the division of Germany, Falkenstein was the seat of the large Bayerische Bierbrauerei Karl Schreider brewery and a well-known restaurant. The demarcation made this restaurant famous, as the historical border (the Steinbach flowing under the restaurant) went straight through the kitchen. In the so-called beer mat agreement of 3./4. July 1945 between the Soviets and the Americans, the redistribution of the land on the former Thuringian-Bavarian border was regulated: Due to the changed course of the demarcation line , the entire restaurant and the farm buildings of the Schreider brewery came to the American occupation zone and to the Soviet occupation zone a piece of the old Reichsstrasse 85 In 1967 the GDR tried in vain to correct the Soviet-American beer mat agreement. The brewery ceased operations in 1968 and was demolished in the 1980s. On November 12, 1989, the barrier at the Inner German border near Falkenstein was removed and the border security systems dismantled. At the beginning of the 1990s, the hotel restaurant was closed and the building fell into disrepair in the period that followed. From 2000 to 2003, however, it was repaired again. Today it bears the name "Villa Falkenstein", in which cultural events of the Falkenstein community, which has been an association since 2005, take place regularly. Most of the other buildings in the once stately Falkenstein settlement have now been demolished.

Falkenstein is located on the Hochstadt-Marktzeuln – Probstzella railway line , on which interzonal trains once ran as part of the Berlin-Munich line. Until 1965 Falkenstein had a stop on the route.
