occupation

Fanfan der Hussar (Original title: Fanfan la Tulipe ) is a French adventure film by Gérard Krawczyk from 2003. Vincent Perez as Fanfan la Tulipe and Penélope Cruz as Adeline La Franchise are in the lead roles. Fanfan uncovers a dangerous plot and has to endure a few fights until he gets together with the woman he has seriously fallen in love with.

The film is a new edition of the coat-and-sword classic of the same title from 1952, in which Gérard Philipe and Gina Lollobrigida played the main characters. Both films draw on episodes from Benjamin Rochefort's stories about fanfans. The original title of the book is "Les mille et une folies de Fanfan la tulipe". Benjamin Rochefort is one of eight pseudonyms under which the writer José-André Lacour wrote.

action

France in the 18th century at the time of King Louis XV. (1710–1774): While various troops fight each other on the battlefield, the officers of the king's army try to explain what is going on there, giving the impression that nobody really knows what it is about . Since the number of fallen soldiers is large, the king demands that his officers arrange for more volunteers to be recruited.

At the same time, the jack-of-all-trades Fanfan la Tulipe finds himself in the position of the fathers of the girls he has had fun with teaming up to teach him a lesson. For the skilled fencer and daredevil who is perfectly in control of his body, however, it is easy to defend himself against the attackers. In the end, however, he is dragged in front of the altar. At the last moment, Fanfan manages to escape, where he meets the young gypsy Adeline la Franchise. She reads from his hand and predicts not only a life of wealth but also that he will marry the king's daughter. Before that, however, he had to join the military. He does so without knowing that Adeline is urged by her adoptive father, a recruiting sergeant, to recruit young men for the military and also to escape the farmers who are already after him again.

On the way to the front, they cross a coach that is being attacked by highwaymen . The only one who intervenes and rushes to the aid of the women is fanfan, who takes on the entire gang of robbers including their captain. No sooner has this been achieved victoriously than a man with a black mask emerges from the forest and Adeline just barely prevents him from shooting at Fanfan. Fanfan tears the mask off his face, which is more than uncomfortable for the stranger. To save his life, he gives Fanfan a precious ring. Adeline is sure that the man in the black mask is responsible for the attack on the women's carriage. Shortly afterwards they also find out who Fanfan saved, the Marquise de Pompadour, the king's mistress and his daughter Henriette. The marquise thanked Fanfan by giving him a valuable piece of jewelry in the shape of a tulip.

After the first military exercises, however, Fanfan no longer feels like submitting to the military drill. It is made drastically clear to him that it is not so easy to just walk.

In the meantime, the carriage with the stately women has arrived at the castle, where Madame de Pompadour Corsini, the king's minister, lets it be known that the streets are no longer safe. He hypocritically regrets, because he is the man with the black mask. Shortly afterwards he left the castle in black with a map containing all the records of the troop movements of the French army.

Fanfan, however, who managed to escape once again, wants to pay a visit to Princess Henriette, who he believes is destined for him. However, your reaction is completely different from what you expected. With her screams she wakes the guards who throw fanfans into the dungeon. The king wants to hang him. When Adeline finds out, she rushes to him and confesses her love to him. For the first time, a fanfan also feels that there is something that goes beyond a quick flirtation. In the castle, where Adeline wants to ask the king for mercy for fanfans, she meets Madame de Pompadour, who wants to help her. She leads Adeline to Corsini of all people, who has to decide who will be admitted to the king. At the last second, so to speak, Fanfan appears, who was able to free himself again to stand by Adeline and prove to the king that Corsini, his confidante, is the man with the black mask and thus a traitor. Driven into a corner, he admits that too, but grabs Adeline, holds a knife to her throat and forces his escape, driving Adeline as a protective shield in front of him. Of course, Fanfan follows the two. In a fortified complex it becomes clear that Corsini is making a pact with the Austrian enemy. After some turbulence and dangerous situations, a victory for fan fans over Corsini is inevitable. The adventurer's white shirt, which was accidentally hoisted, also works the miracle that there is no bloody argument between the French and the Austrians, as a white flag indicates the surrender of the Austrians.

Fanfan and Adeline appear before the king, who calls him a friend who from now on belongs to his house, and offers him a title, a lock, maintenance and other amenities. Fanfan thanks that it is already too much of an honor that the king called him a friend. However, he believes that a man himself must be the maker of his happiness. It is his luck to marry this woman at his side. Adeline is not the daughter of a king, but she is his queen. She would rule three acres of land, his heart, and a few children, God willing. A happy future begins for Fanfan and Adeline, which includes many children.

background

King Louis XV, first praised by the people as “the much beloved” and later called “the unloved”, was King of France and Navarre from 1715 to 1774. In fact, he was in a relationship with the Marquise de Pompadour. He has often been accused of being responsible for the grievances that occurred under his grandson Louis XVI. led to the French Revolution . The Seven Years' War (1756–1763) fell under his reign, in which all major European powers were involved with Prussia and Great Britain / Kurhannover on the one hand and the imperial Austrian Habsburg Monarchy , France and Russia and the Holy Roman Empire on the other .

criticism

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on May 15, 2003 that the film wants to be a charming satire but cannot find the right rhythms for the gags. He wanders "pathetic" through routine action scenes and never offers humor or romance. The “tame” fight scenes would create neither tension nor humor. The locations in the old castles and the costumes are effective.

The Lexicon of International Film wrote that the film was "straightforward but highly conventional adventure entertainment". He is an "elaborate remake of the French coat-and-epee classic" fanfan, the hussar , which "its lightness and elegance" never achieves.

For Kino.de , the film was a “contemporary pepped up, classic coat and sword legend [… which] was supposed to add a cheerful, lively note as the opening film of the 56th Cannes Festival”, “but with the triumphant festival beginnings” of previous years “not keep up ”. The new 'fan fan' is "nice entertainment from a genre that is still valued in France, where it works better because of the many Gallic allusions in the dialogue". Reference was made to the original "with the unforgettable Gérard Philipe and the classy Gina Lollobrigida", which bribed with charm that the remake lacks. [...] As a genre film, 'Fanfan' is “always pretty to look at, naive in tone, occasionally funny, rarely thrilling”.

Cinema determined that two action specialists, producer Luc Besson and director Gérard Krawczyk, had dared to remake the elegant classic from 1951 [...], and stated the film: "With a faster pace and a pinch of eroticism, this action is really enjoyable" , but then restricted a "instead of degenspitzer irony there is unfortunately only slapstick." Conclusion: "Amusing, but not as elegant as the original."
