Maamme ( Finnish ) or Vårt land ( Swedish ) ("Our Country") is the national anthem of Finland .
It was composed by Fredrik Pacius ; the original Swedish text is by Johan Ludvig Runeberg and was originally written for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Porvoo's town charter ; on this occasion it was performed with music by Runeberg himself. Later it appeared as a prologue to the seal Ensign Stahl . The text is stylistically and content- wise influenced by the Szózat (appeal) by Mihály Vörösmarty . The first performance with the music of Pacius took place on May 13, 1848. The Finnish rewrite of the text was done in 1889 by Paavo Cajander . On official occasions only the first and last verse are usually sung.
Several attempts were made in the 1880s and 1920s to replace the national anthem with Finnish-language poetry, but those efforts ended in the 1930s.
The same melody also serves as the national anthem in Estonia (again since independence in 1990), sung with the text Mu isamaa ("My Fatherland"). The Livs also use the melody for their hymn Min izāmō .
The autonomous Åland archipelago has its own national anthem, Ålänningens sång (“Ålander's Song”).

1 |
Oi maamme, Suomi, synnyinmaa, |
Vårt land, vårt land, vårt fosterland, |
---|---|---|
2 |
On maamme köyhä, siksi jää, |
Vårt land är fattigt, skall så bli |
3 |
Ovatpa meille rakkahat |
Vi älska våra strömmars brus |
4th |
Täss auroin, miekoin, miettehin |
Här striddes våra fäders strid |
5 |
Tään kansan taistelut ken voi |
Vem täljde väl de striders valley. |
6th |
Täss on sen veri virrannut |
Och det var här det blodet flöt, |
7th |
Tääll 'olo meill on verraton |
Här är oss ljuvt, här är oss god, |
8th |
Yes tässä, täss' on tämä maa, |
Och här och här är detta land. |
9 |
Jos loistoon meitä saatettais |
Och fördes vi att bo i glans |
10 |
Totuuden, runon kotimaa |
O land, du tusen sjöars land, |
11 |
Sun kukoistukses kuorestaan |
Din blomning, sluten än i knopp, |
German translation
1st and 11th verses (by Benny Benz)
O home, Finland, our country,
sound loud, you dear word!
No land as far as the edge of the sky.
No country with mountains and valleys and beaches
is loved more than our north,
Here our fathers' refuge.
Once your blossom struggles to break free,
ripe from the bud compulsion.
Yes, once out of our love, go
to your hope, bright and big.
And our homeland
song resounds in a higher tone.
