The First Division 1978/79 was the 40th season of the top Cypriot division in men's football .

Omonia Nicosia became champion for the ninth time and for the sixth time in a row . Half of the league was in danger of relegation before the last match day. At the end of the season, Nea Salamis Famagusta and Digenis Akritas Morphou, two teams were relegated for the first time.
