The Flensburg Stadium (also: Stadion Flensburg-Mürwik and, more rarely, Volksparkstadion ) is a stadium in the Flensburg district of Fruerlund , which is often added to the district of Mürwik . The sports facility with soccer field and tartan track is an integral part of the Volkspark and is registered as a cultural monument of Fruerlund . In contrast to the small stadium in Flensburg-Weiche , the Manfred Werner Stadium of ETSV Weiche , no so-called safety games can be played in the venue of the Flensburg 08 sports club .

history

Start of construction in 1925 and inauguration in 1927

In 1925 the construction of the Flensburg Volkspark began and with it the construction of the stadium. On July 3, 1927, the stadium was inaugurated with the 18th Turnerfest der Nordmark.

Adolf Hitler campaigned in 1932

On Saturday, April 23, 1932, the plane of Adolf Hitler landed at the Flensburg-Schäferhaus airfield , who gave an election speech in the Flensburg Stadium at 7 p.m. for the Prussian state elections for the fourth electoral period that took place the following day . In his approximately 25-minute speech , Hitler agitated against the government - according to the Volkszeitung in front of 20,000, according to the Flensburger Nachrichten in front of over 40,000 listeners - against the government , spoke of a "crowd of 13 million conquered fighters", declared that the "movement" of the NSDAP 13 Was founded years earlier and finally stylized himself up to a prophet who was right for 13 years. In 13 years, he claimed, his "movement would be one in 13 million". At the end of the speech, many of the audience present raised their right arm and sang the Horst Wessel song . Hitler is said to have left the podium very quickly and was taken by car to the train station hotel , which later became Hotel Europa at the central bus station, where he stayed overnight. He left the following day. Hitler's visit in 1932 was the only “public visit” to Flensburg and Mürwik. Soon afterwards, at the end of January 1933, the National Socialist seizure of power took place (cf. chronology ). Four years later, Hitler visited the " harbor in front of the Mürwik Naval School " with the Aviso Grille , not in public . A full 13 years later, on May 23, 1945, the Third Reich ended with the arrest of the last Reich government in the Mürwik special area adjoining the Volkspark .

3rd Federal Youth Meeting of German Sports Youth 1970

After plans for the 3rd Federal Youth Meeting of the German Sports Youth in Bonn had failed , the Flensburg DSB board member Hans Hansen brought the youth games to the Fördestadt. After Reutlingen (1955) and Schweinfurt (1967), the Flensburg Sports Association, founded in 1947, hosted and organized the “Mini-Olympics” in 1970. The event, one of the biggest sporting events in the history of Flensburg , took place from May 16 to 24, 1970. In the stadium as well as in other sports facilities, in school sports halls, in the Idrætshallen on Westliche Höhe and in the German House , more than 4,000 young athletes competed for medals in over 40 sports. The Flensburg Stadium was the venue for the international Germany-Holland match in athletics and the Germany-England youth football match, as was the final event with the farewell to all participants. Some of them managed to take part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich two years later .

Soccer games

On May 17, 1981, almost exactly 15 years after the Wembley goal , the so-called World Cup comeback game Germany - England took place, in which the two teams were made up of well-known world-class players. The stadium was sold out with 14,000 spectators. The football matches played in the stadium also include high-level friendly and test matches from Bundesliga clubs . The SV Werder Bremen defeated shortly after winning the German Soccer Championship Men 1993 on 13 July of the same year, 6,000 football supporters the host team from Flensburg 08 with 6: 2nd In another high-class game twenty years later on July 23, 2013 in front of 5,700 spectators, the London Premier League club West Ham United won 3-1 against Bundesliga club Hamburger SV .

In the following year, 2014, the HSV test match - a permanent guest in SH: Z football summer for years - against the Italian professional club Lazio Rome from Serie A was planned, but the Flensburg regulatory authorities increased the security requirements at short notice in coordination with the police. The local police demanded the installation of barred fan blocks, breakwaters on the standing beams and a licensed civil security guard for every 50 spectators. Shortly before, Interior Minister Andreas Breitner had visited the Mürwik-Fruerlund police station and welcomed the personnel deployment model there, in which the area of responsibility had been expanded to include the countryside. The game that took place on August 8, 2014 was relocated to Lübeck's Lohmühle . The move to Lübeck was sharply criticized in the Flensburger Tageblatt :

“Apparently, the city and the police acted prematurely and failed to obtain expert information. This also applies to the Interior Ministry [...] Like yesterday by the DFB -Hauptabteilung Prevention & Security in Frankfurt the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association was informed there are "no safety concerns based on current knowledge." [...] “From the start, they didn't want this game in Flensburg,” said a city employee who doesn't want to be named. [...] "

- Jürgen Muhl : Quotes from the Flensburger Tageblatt from August 1, 2014

Nevertheless, the Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publisher announced in April 2015 that it would continue to bring professional teams to Flensburg as it does every year. On May 25, 2015, Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen won 3-0 against TSB Flensburg in a friendship or test match in front of 1950 spectators . The Flensburg club is celebrating its 150th anniversary and its soccer team marching through from the Schleswig-Flensburg 1 District League (2013/2014) to the North-West Association League 2014/2015 to the SH League 2015/2016.

Sponsoring association and other competitions

In 2006 the sponsoring association Flensburger Stadion e. V. founded. Three full-time and some part-time employees employed by the club look after the stadium and other sports facilities located there. The city of Flensburg is contributing around 210,000 euros annually (as of 2015) in order to preserve the aging systems. In 2013 the city began to renovate the building and to have a new tartan track built.

Nowadays the stadium can hold up to 10,000 spectators, 1,000 of them in the stands . Every now and then athletics competitions are held there, for example the relay race of the Flensburg Schools , which was attended by around 1,500 students from 31 schools and around 11,000 fans in 2014 alone.

Another memorable event in the history of the stadium was the hosting of the Schleswig-Holstein Games on September 8, 2012. The radio station RSH presented a competition in which the athletes - 20 teams of 20 players - compete in curious disciplines such as beer athlon "Brain gym", "fish Tennis", "Burn rubber" Boot throwing "," carbon bumping " rum balls " or " peoples bales could be measured", accompanied by cheerleaders and a performance by the Dollerupers Michael Schulte .

Investments

The Flensburg stadium includes “a spacious sports facility with a total of ten playing areas, an A-course with athletics facilities and all-round auditoriums including a covered grandstand, an artificial turf pitch, as well as six grass pitches, a sand pitch and a sports home with over 20 changing rooms, numerous meeting rooms, a restaurant and Accommodation for a full-time groundskeeper ” ( Flensburg Journal ) . - There are also hotels and the Flensburg youth hostel in the vicinity of the stadium, which indirectly support the broad infrastructure.

Connection

The Stadion bus stop , which also serves as an important transfer point, is located near the stadium . It is served by the city bus routes 3, 5 and 7, which means that a bus from different parts of the city stops there approx. Every 5–10 minutes.
