The Schleswig-Holstein Association League has been the third highest (until then: second highest) football class in Schleswig-Holstein since the 2017/18 season . It is directed by the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association (SHFV) and consists of six regional squadrons (as of the 2020/21 season), currently called North, North-East, East, West, South and South-East .

With the end of the 2007/08 season, the hitherto existing was Verbandsliga Schleswig-Holstein in Schleswig-Holstein-Liga renamed. It has since been one of the fifth highest leagues in Germany and officially bears the name Oberliga from 2017/18 . The number of their teams was reduced from 18 to 16. The four regional association leagues of Schleswig-Holstein have replaced the district league since 2008 , as the SHFV has not had any districts since then. Therefore, as the sixth highest league level, they formed the substructure of the Schleswig-Holstein League; the four masters (usually) rose to it. Below the association leagues, there were recently eleven circular leagues, which formed the third division in the SHFV and the seventh in the DFB .

In 2017 another league structural reform took place. Since a two-track regional league was (re) established as the substructure of the Oberliga, the association leagues and district leagues are now downgraded by one level each. At the same time, the "flexible game operation" was introduced, which allows the association and district league relays to be divided according to criteria that appear reasonable. The district boundaries are no longer decisive, so there is no “sliding scale” for ascent and descent.

After the association league increased from 64 to 72 teams due to the cancellation of the 2019/20 season, the teams for the 2020/21 season will compete against each other in six seasons. Because of the voluntary withdrawals of FC Reher / Puls and TSV Neustadt in Holstein (from the disbanded SG Neustrand) from the state league and because there was no relegation, there would have been "actually" 74 club division clubs. However, the green and white Tolk and the second team of PSV Union Neumünster have voluntarily withdrawn into the district league.

Association League North-East: approximately Rendsburg-Eckernförde ; partly Kiel and Schleswig-Flensburg; an association from Plön (TuS Nortorf);

Association League East: approximately Kiel, Plön , Neumünster ; a club from Ostholstein (TSV Gremersdorf);

Association League West: around Steinburg , Dithmarschen ; partly Plön; an association from Rendsburg-Eckernförde (Grün-Weiß Todenbüttel);

Association League South: around Stormarn , Segeberg ; partly Duchy of Lauenburg ;

Association League South-East: approximately Lübeck , Duchy of Lauenburg, Ostholstein; partly Segeberg; a club from Stormarn (SV Hamberge).

The clubs in the Pinneberg district belong without exception to the Hamburg Football Association , as do numerous clubs from the southern parts of Stormarn (e.g. Oststeinbeker SV ), Lauenburg (e.g. TuS Dassendorf ) and Segeberg (e.g. Eintracht Norderstedt ).

History of the association leagues in Schleswig-Holstein

The name Verbandsliga has been used in Schleswig-Holstein since 1968: Initially, until 1978, the leagues following the highest Schleswig-Holstein league were named as follows (see: Landesliga Schleswig-Holstein (1968–1999) ): the Verbandsliga Nord (for the districts of North and East, or differently: the cities of Kiel, Neumünster and Flensburg and the districts of North Friesland, Schleswig, Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Plön) and the Verbandsliga Süd (for the districts of West and South, or differently: the rest of Holstein and Dithmarschen). Today's Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein had the name Landesliga Schleswig-Holstein during this period . In 1978 there was a name change: the state league was continued as the association league, while the previous association leagues were given the name Landesliga.

The designation association league for the top division in Schleswig-Holstein remained in place until 2008, that for the two state leagues until 1999. They were replaced in that year by four district upper leagues and these again in 2008 with different spatial delimitation from the current four association leagues . On June 4, 2016, the Association Day resolved the above-mentioned division reform from the 2017/18 season. The association league is the seventh highest division, as the new sixth highest division, the state league below the Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein with the two seasons Schleswig and Holstein was reintroduced after 18 years. The names for the two seasons are new, instead of the previous North and South .
