The Florida State University , or "FSU" or "Florida State", is since 1851 a state university in the US state of Florida , based in Tallahassee near the Florida State Capitol .

In the fall of 2010, 40,838 students were enrolled.

Professors

Well-known professors at Florida State University include a. Nobel laureate in chemistry Harold Kroto , Nobel laureate in physics John Robert Schrieffer , psychologist Roy Baumeister , Pulitzer laureate Robert Olen Butler , chemists Robert A. Holton and Michael Kasha . The physics Nobel Prize laureate Paul Dirac and the musician Ernst von Dohnányi were also professors at the FSU.

In college football , the Florida State Seminoles play in the Atlantic Coast Conference . In 1993 and 1999 they won the national championship under coach Bobby Bowden and in 2014 under coach Jimbo Fisher . The football stadium Doak Campbell Stadium has a spectator capacity of 83,500, it is known for the Tomahawk Chop , which the fans of the FSU always celebrate before the game. The men's athletics team won the NCAA championships in 2006 and 2008. Their top athlete Walter Dix won bronze medals in the 100 and 200-meter races at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
