The Fokker 50 , shortly also F50 is a turboprop - Aircraft medium size of the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker for passenger and cargo transportation on short distances.

It was produced from 1987 to 1996 and is still used today by some airlines, including Palestinian Airlines and CityJet . Other airlines, such as KLM , Ethiopian Airlines and Air Baltic , have already retired them.

In Germany it was used by Contact Air and DLT.

As of December 2012, 129 of the 214 F50s built are still in active service.

The prototype of the Fokker 50 with the registration PH-OSI is in the Aviodrome aviation museum in Lelystad .

Fokker 50

The Fokker 50 is the successor to the Fokker F-27 , from which only a few parts have been taken over - the Fokker 50 has largely been redeveloped. Its maiden flight graduated from the Fokker 50 in the year 1985. It is powered by two turboprop - engines Pratt & Whitney powered -PW-125-B. Depending on the configuration in which the aircraft was equipped, there is space for up to 60 people in the aircraft cabin. A striking feature is u. a. the soot-blackened area at the rear of the engines, around which exhaust gases flow due to the unfavorable location of the exhaust system.

Fokker 50 Freighter

The Fokker 50 Freighters that have been converted into cargo machines are called Fokker 50s. Two of them were put into service in January 2008 by the Italian cargo airline MiniLiner . For this purpose, the machines were equipped with two large loading hatches. The capacity of the machines is 7.7 t of freight and a loading volume of 60 m³. The range is specified as 1,750 km with a payload of 6.5 t.

Fokker 60

The Fokker 60 is a 1.62 m stretched, structurally reinforced military variant of the Fokker 50 with a large cargo hatch on the right side (behind the cockpit). It had its maiden flight on November 2, 1995 and was also with military equipment such as doors for parachutists , an APU and ECM / IR warning systems as well as disruptive body throwers. The aircraft was developed from 1994 onwards at the request of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht . This received four machines of this type in 1996, a fifth under construction was not completed due to the company's insolvency. An APS-143 search radar for maritime purposes was installed in two of the machines in 2005 . All four Fokker 60s built have been in service with the Peruvian Navy since 2010.

Of the 214 Fokker 50s produced, around 140 were still registered as of August 2018. The world's largest operators are Amapola Flyg with 16, Skyward Express with 12 and the Singapore Air Force with 9 aircraft.

Incidents

From the first flight in 1985 to October 2019, the Fokker 50/60 suffered 15 total aircraft losses. In six of them 110 people were killed. Extracts:

On September 15, 1995, a Malaysia Airlines Fokker 50 ( aircraft registration 9M-MGH ) crashed into an inhabited area during a failed go- around maneuver at Tawau Airport ( Borneo , Malaysia ). The go-around had been initiated because the machine had previously only been touched down 500 meters from the runway end. Of the 53 people on board, 34 died (see also Malaysia Airlines flight 2133 ) .

On November 6, 2002, a Luxair Fokker 50 (LX-LGB) fell in thick fog from Berlin-Tempelhof when approaching runway 24 shortly before Luxembourg airport in a field near Niederanven . 20 people were killed, including the Luxembourg painter Michel Majerus . Only the captain and one passenger survived the crash seriously injured (see also Luxair flight 9642 ) .

On February 10, 2004, a Fokker 50 of the Iranian Kish Air (EP-LCA) crashed while approaching Sharjah Airport in the United Arab Emirates , killing 43 of the 46 occupants (see also Kish Air flight 7170 ) .

On March 4, 2013, a Fokker 50 of the Congolese CAA - Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation (9Q-CBD) crashed on approach in bad weather in Goma . Seven people died in the crash landing; three of the ten occupants of the plane coming from Lodja survived the crash.

On July 2, 2014, a Skyward International Aviation (5Y-CET) Fokker 50 with four people on board collided with a building immediately after taking off from Nairobi . According to the flight recorder , the speed of an engine was halved and the aircraft accident investigation showed that the Fokker was overloaded by 500 kg. None of the four people on board survived the accident.

On October 11, 2019, a Fokker 50 from the Kenyan Silverstone Air Services (5Y-IZO) rolled over the end of the runway by 300 meters when taking off from Nairobi-Wilson Airport ( Kenya ) and came to a standstill in muddy terrain between some trees. All 55 occupants, 5 crew members and 50 passengers survived the accident; 2 passengers were slightly injured. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
