biography

During her school years she tried out several sports, and played for a while soccer . At the age of 16 she became the Cameroonian high jump champion and came second the following year. On the advice of her trainer, she eventually focused on the triple jump. At the African Championships in Cameroon in 1996, she won the bronze medal. In 1998 she came second at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. In the same year she improved the African record to 14.02 m, but lost it after only one week.

With a width of 14.70 m, she won back the African record in 1999 and also set a new national record in the long jump with 6.55 m . At the 1999 World Championships , she did not qualify in the triple jump (14.12 m). In 2000 she was second again at the African Championships in Algiers . At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , she was able to qualify for the final, but ended up only in tenth place. At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton , she was second behind the Russian Tatiana Lebedewa . At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 , she was again second. In the same year she improved the African record to 14.95 m at the African championships in the Tunisian city of Radès and also won the long jump competition.

Outside Africa, her series of second places continued, for example at the 2003 World Indoor Championships in Manchester (behind Ashia Hansen ) and the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis (behind Lebedewa), where she improved her African record to 15.05 m.

Shortly before the 2004 Olympic Games , she lost her African record to Yamilé Aldama , who comes from Cuba and is now starting for Sudan . In the Olympic final in Athens she improved and jumped 15,30 m. Not only did she regain her record, but she also became the first ever Cameroonian Olympic champion, as well as the first African woman to win anything other than a running competition. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , she won the gold medal with a new personal best of 15.39 m.
