Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London

Freemasons' Hall in London is the seat of the United Grand Lodge of England and the meeting point of the Masonic lodges of the London area.

history

The address on Great Queen Street between Holborn and Covent Garden has served as a place for Masonic gatherings since 1775. The current building is the third of its kind, it was built between 1927 and 1933 in a variant of late historicism or art deco style. The architects were Henry Victor Ashley and F. Winton Newman.

The building was first called Masonic Peace Memorial and should recall the 3225 British Freemasons, who in World War I had fallen. The "pacifist" name was changed to Freemasons' Hall after the outbreak of World War II in 1939. The construction was funded by donations - the Masonic Million Memorial Fund raised over £ 1 million.

Freemasons Hall is classified as Grade II * on the UK's Official List of Monuments .

In the center of the current building is the grand temple, the assembly hall of the grand lodge, the grand chapter and the annual meetings of several provincial lodges. The mighty bronze doors and the ceiling mosaics of the great hall are remarkable. This is 37 m long, 27 m wide and 19 m high.

In addition to masonry symbols, the ceiling decorations include figures representing the four cardinal virtues - prudence , temperance , valor , justice - and wearing the coat of arms of Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn . The second youngest son of Queen Victoria served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge from 1901 to 1939. The Masonic Peace Memorial was erected at his suggestion. The outer doors are made of bronze , each weighing one and a quarter tons. In the large temple there is a large organ that was installed by the renowned British organ builder Henry Willis & Sons .

Hourly tours of the building are given during the week. The library, the museum and the great temple are shown. There are a total of five tours per day. The tours on Saturday must be booked in advance.

Library and museum

The library and museum are open to the public from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., admission is free. The museum has a diverse collection of objects with a Masonic background, including clocks, furniture, glassware, jewelry, chinaware, and regalia. The items on display are owned by famous Freemasons such as King Edward VII and Winston Churchill . The library and museum also include one of the most extensive collections of friendly societies in all of Europe, including various books and artifacts.

Other temples in the buildings

In addition to the large temple, there are another 23 Masonic temples in the building. All are richly decorated and have different Art Deco styles . These temples are generally not open to public tours.

Notable temples:

  • Temple # 10 is located below the large bell tower. The interior of the temple includes a combination of the Art Deco style with Egyptian design.
  • Temple No. 11 was largely funded by donations from Japan and the Far East and has therefore been decorated in a lavish style. The interior is dominated by stylized chrysanthemums , the national flower and the Imperial Seal of Japan.
  • Temple No. 12, known as the "Burma Temple", is decorated with stylized Burmese artwork and features a plaque depicting the contributions of Freemasons from the former British colony of Burma .

Unlike the Grand Temple , which is open daily for public tours, the other 23 temples are usually closed to the public because they are used by the London lodges for their weekly meetings.
