history
The original inhabitants of the San Joaquin Valley area were the Yokuts . They traded with other Californian tribes. The Fresno district emerged in 1856 after the California gold rush . It was named after the ash trees (Spanish: Fresno) standing on the banks of the San Joaquin River.
Millerton, near Fort Miller, became a county seat. Other early settlements in the county were Firebaugh's Ferry, Scottsburg, and Elkhorn Springs.
On December 24, 1867, the River San Joaquin burst its banks and flooded Millerton. Some residents rebuilt everything, others moved away.
The actual establishment of Fresno is set with the establishment of the Central Pacific Railroad depot in Easterby's in 1872. At that time they set up the first Southern Pacific lines . A business center quickly formed around the station and Millerton residents began to move near it to avoid further flooding. Just two years after the station was built, the community headquarters were moved there. In 1885 the independent city of Fresno was founded. The old districts of Millerton were inundated with the establishment of the Friant Dam and are now under Millerton Lake .
The central location in the valley influenced further development. The decision of the California state to build a central road axis dates back to 1910, parts of which were then designated California State Route 99 in 1926 . At that time, ideas arose to build a transverse axis that would connect the coast with Yosemite National Park . The construction company was formed in 1930, and in 1934 the route was named California State Route 41 . The third route included a connection to the Kings River, which was built in 1905 - this was expanded until 1933 and designated California State Route 180 in 1935 . The three state highways enclose the business center of Fresno today as a motorway ring - the intersection-free expansion with three motorway junctions took place until 1980.
The Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill was the United States' first modern landfill. It opened in 1937 and was shut down in 1987.
In September 1958, Bank of America introduced a new product called BankAmericard in Fresno. BankAmericard became the first successful credit card to be spun off to Visa Inc. in 1970 .
