The Königin-Carola-Gymnasium was a state humanistic gymnasium for boys in the southern suburb of Leipzig .
history
The Königin-Carola-Gymnasium was built at Elisenstrasse 62 (today Bernhard-Göring-Strasse) according to plans by city building officer Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg and inaugurated on October 16, 1902. The name was given to the Saxon queen , who had lost her office through the death of her husband in the same year. The building was located between Arndtstrasse and Schenkendorfstrasse opposite Albrecht-Dürer-Platz. It was a three-story, 21-axis building with a 5-axis center riser . The side wings again had eight axes. The gym was in the courtyard.
At the time of opening, it was one of the two so-called state high schools in the city alongside the König-Albert-Gymnasium . During the period of National Socialism , the grammar school was renamed in 1937/38, initially in Friedrich Nietzsche School, State High School for Boys and later in Günther Prien School, State High School for Boys . Prien was a submarine commander celebrated by the Nazi regime during the Second World War and had attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium for a few years, but left it in 1924 at the age of 16 to initially go to sea with the merchant navy .
In the bombing of December 4, 1943 , the building was completely destroyed and the area was not rebuilt after the rubble had been cleared. Today there is a garage and a parking lot on the property.
