Friedrich-Otto Scharbau

Friedrich-Otto Scharbau (born October 4, 1935 in Kiel ; † December 1, 2013 there ) was a German Protestant - Lutheran theologian . From 1983 to 2000 he was President of the Lutheran Church Office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany .

Live and act

Friedrich-Otto Scharbau was born on October 4, 1935 in Kiel . After studying Protestant theology in Kiel and Göttingen , he worked as a parish pastor in Kiel, then as a study inspector at the Preachers' Seminar in Preetz and finally as a senior church councilor in the service of the Schleswig-Holstein , later North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church .

From 1983 until his retirement in 2000 he was President of the Lutheran Church Office of the VELKD in Hanover , from 1987 to 1993 Lutheran President of the Executive Committee of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship (later: Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe) and its member from 1993 to 2001. He took part in the general assemblies of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship in Strasbourg in 1987, in Vienna in 1993 and in Belfast in 2001, as well as in the general assemblies of the Lutheran World Federation in Budapest in 1984 , in Curitiba / Brazil in 1990 and in Hong Kong in 1997 .

From 2000 to 2003 he was honorary president of the Luther Academy Ratzeburg , from 2003 to 2007 of the Luther Academy Sondershausen-Ratzeburg . In 2002 he was appointed honorary canon of the Loccum monastery .

The theological faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) awarded him an honorary doctorate on November 25, 2005 . It honored the academic achievements of the former President of the Lutheran Church Office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD), among other things, in the field of church constitution and ecumenical dialogue .

Scharbau had acquired “high respect in the Lutheran churches in Germany and beyond” through his literary work and his commitment to the church leadership and “gave impetus to the renewal of the church from the spirit of the Reformation through his work ,” summarized in the Eulogy .

He has participated in national and international committees on church legislation and in interdenominational dialogue and "thus made a contribution to identity and understanding within the churches". His impulses and experiences have entered numerous writings that deal with the shape of the church and its preaching, its confession, its worship and its relationship to the state. The most important are included in the volume "Luther and the Church".

Scharbau last lived in Preetz in retirement .
