The 1988/89 season of the Oberliga was the 15th season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
In the two rounds of promotion, MSV Duisburg and KSV Hessen Kassel, each as group winners, and Preußen Münster and SpVgg Unterhaching, each as second in the group, made it to the 2nd Bundesliga .
