The 1987/88 season of the Oberliga was the 14th season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
In the two rounds of promotion, Hertha BSC and 1. FSV Mainz 05 were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as group winners, while Eintracht Braunschweig and Viktoria Aschaffenburg were both runners-up in their group .
