The 2001/02 season of the Oberliga was the eighth season of the Oberliga as the fourth highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the initially four-track - later three- and two-track - Regional League as the third highest division for the 1994/95 season.

Promotion to Regionalliga Nord
Oberliga Nord
The leaders of the Lower Saxony / Bremen season, VfB Oldenburg , and Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein, the amateurs of Hamburger SV , played off the promoted team in the Regionalliga in two games after the season ended . The first leg in Oldenburg ended in a goalless draw, before Hamburg clearly won the second leg in their own stadium 5-2 and secured promotion to the regional league.

Oberliga Nordost
The first in the squadrons North, the amateurs from Hertha BSC , and South, Dynamo Dresden , played the promoted team in the Regionalliga in two games after the end of the season . The home side won the first leg in Dresden 1-0, so a 0-0 win in the second leg in Berlin was enough for promotion to the regional league.
