The Berlin Bundesplatz station is a Berlin urban express and underground station on the border of the districts of Wilmersdorf ( Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district ) and Friedenau ( Tempelhof-Schöneberg district ). It is located south of the square of the same name , right next to the city motorway at the intersection of the Ringbahn and Bundesallee and is served by the S41, S42 and S46 lines of the S-Bahn and the U9 line of the Berlin U-Bahn .

S-Bahn station

With the construction of the viaduct of the Ringbahn at the southern end of what was then Straßburger Platz , the first Wilmersdorf-Friedenau station was built and opened with the commissioning of the western ring in November 1877. After the four-track expansion of the ring, a new station of the same name was opened on May 1, 1892, located a little east of the current location. With the electrification, the station became a stop for the S-Bahn on November 6, 1928; In 1938 it was renamed Wilmersdorf . After the closure of the Ringbahn as a result of the S-Bahn strike in 1980 , passenger traffic to this station was not resumed.

In the course of the resumption of the S-Bahn traffic on the Ringbahn, the S-Bahn station was relocated around 110 meters to the west towards the Bundesplatz in 1992/1993 in order to enable passengers to change to the underground more quickly. At the same time, new connecting stairs to the underground platforms were built. Like the underground station, the S-Bahn station was also named Bundesplatz . Today's S-Bahn station went into operation on December 17, 1993.

As one of 20 so-called main stations of the Berlin S-Bahn, the station is manned by local supervision. Since the end of 2015, train handling has been carried out by the driver using the driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).

The Bundesplatz underground station went into operation on January 29, 1971. It was built from 1962 to 1968 as part of the construction of the U-Bahn line 9 (today: U9) and was designed by the then Senate Building Director Rainer G. Rümmler . Similar to the Berliner Straße underground station (also U9), the two tracks run in two separate tunnels, which run under the ring road and the motorway to the east and west of the Bundesallee car tunnel. The two platforms each have a side platform and were connected at both ends via a vestibule.

The walls on the platform were white, the walls behind the tracks were tiled in blue. The station name was originally attached in metal letters in a white, horizontal tiled strip. The design of the underground station was thus similar to the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and Berliner Straße underground stations that were also designed by Rümmler at the same time and opened on the same day .

In the years 2006-2008 the platform halls were renovated and redesigned. The walls on the platform were given new, larger tiles, while the walls in the track area were clad with new enamel panels. The western hall (towards Rathaus Steglitz ) was kept in shades of blue, the eastern hall (towards Osloer Straße ) in shades of brown. The vestibules were tiled in blue, brown and white. Murals show earlier views of the Bundesplatz. The platforms were newly tiled with light gray granite and equipped with a guidance system for the blind.

Freight depot

The former Wilmersdorf freight yard is located on the long-distance railway tracks . It begins southeast of today's S-Bahn station and extends to the S-Bahn station Innsbrucker Platz . In 1996 it served as an outdoor area for the InnoTrans trade fair .

After the freight yard was closed, the track systems were dismantled around 2008. In 2010 the 58,000 m² site was sold by Deutsche Bahn . In the future, a housing estate and a commercial area are to be built on this. The building of the signal box Wl , which was built by the architect Rainer G. Rümmler in connection with the construction of the city motorway and was in operation from June 1971 to around 2003, was demolished in spring 2014. The site was exempted from railway operations by a resolution of the Federal Railway Authority on October 6, 2015.

Connection

The station is served by the ring line S41 and S42 as well as the line S46 of the Berlin S-Bahn, the line U9 of the underground and the bus line 248 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.
