Gerald Patrick O'Hara
Gerald Patrick Aloysius O'Hara (born May 4, 1895 in Scranton (Pennsylvania) , † July 16, 1963 in Wimbledon (London) ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop , Diplomat of the Holy See , Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland (1951-1954) and Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain (1954–1963).
career
After his ordination on April 3, 1920 by Cardinal Vicar Basilio Pompili , Pope Pius XI appointed him . on April 26, 1929 titular bishop pro hac vice of Heliopolis in Phenicia and auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia . Cardinal Denis Joseph Dougherty ordained O'Hara episcopal on May 21, 1929 at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Philadelphia . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Monterey-Fresno , John Bernard MacGinley , and the Bishop of Scranton , Thomas Charles O'Reilly .
In 1935 he followed Michael Joseph Keyes SM as Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta and Pius XII. honored him in 1950 with the personal title of Archbishop. In 1959, he resigned from his position as Bishop of Savannah and became titular Archbishop of Pessinus . He was the governor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Romania from 1946 until his expulsion on July 5, 1950.
His activity as regent of the Apostolic Nunciature in Bucharest (1947–1950) contributed to the institutional preservation of the Catholic Church in Romania during the communist dictatorship. Between 1948 and 1950 he carried out eight secret episcopal ordinations in Romania , both for the Roman Catholic dioceses and for the dioceses of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church . In 1950 he was convicted of espionage in Bucharest and expelled from the country.
