Gernotshagen is a German pagan metal band from Thuringia, founded in 1999 .

history

1999–2001: Founding Phase and Early Development

Gernotshagen was founded in 1999 by Daniel Möller ( vocals ) and Bastian Techet ( guitar ) in Trusetal as a black metal band called "Grafen von Gleichen". Shortly after it was founded, the musicians who were friends Maik Pomplun (guitar) and Steffen Beck ( bass guitar ) joined the band, and the previous name was discarded. A local chronicle then helped the group to get its name Gernotshagen . The name is based on a place near the Wallenburg Tower , which existed hundreds of years ago and was also called Gernotshagen .

In 2000 the group was looking for a keyboardist and a drummer to complete the band. Sebastian Jung ( keyboard ) joined Gernotshagen in the summer . In the spring of 2001, Tobias Völker was reinforced. He took over the drums , although so far he could only play guitar . In the same year the first songs were recorded with Winter and The Night of the Raven and Herigest .

With the now completed line-up and the first own songs in the repertoire, the band played their first concert on April 28, 2001 together with Falling Leaf's and Wallenburg in front of around 200 spectators. After a few more local appearances, the demo Infinitus Malum was released on June 24, 2001 . On August 25 of the same year they played for the first time with the Riedfest at an open air. This took place in Rohr with around 800 spectators.

2002–2007: founding a studio, recording contract and debut album

At the beginning of 2002 the band withdrew to the Power Track Studio in Schmalkalden and began working on their debut album, Wintermythen , which was released in the summer of the same year.

After the album was released, concerts with XIV Dark Centuries , Menhir and Odroerir followed in Germany . Between 2002 and 2004 new pieces were composed for the second studio album. On December 25, 2004, Tobias Völker and Maik Pomplun founded their own recording studio, which was completed around three months later and is located in Steinbach (Bad Liebenstein). In the spring of 2005, the recording of the second studio album, Märe aus wälderen Hallen, began in the same studio. The album was released in January 2007 via Trollzorn Records . It was initially only available in Germany and is now being distributed internationally along with a re-release of the album Wintermythen .

In April 2006 they played for the first time at the Ragnarök Festival . They were there the following year as well. In August 2006 they came into contact with the Trollzorn label at the Barther Metal Open Air . After a conversation and various negotiations, a contract was finally concluded.

Since 2007: national breakthrough

The year 2007 began with the first concert tour, which the band played together with the Dutch folk metal band Heidevolk , the Faroese band Týr , Asmodi and Elexorien . Numerous other tours and concerts followed, which helped the band to become better known. In 2009 the band played at several national festivals with well-known bands from the pagan and black metal scene , such as Suidakra , Cryptic Wintermoon , Kampfar , God Dethroned , Black Messiah , Graveworm , Moonsorrow , Endstille , Nomans Land and many more.

From January 2, 2009 to January 18, Gernotshagen competed with the Light A Pagan Fire Tour on the European tour, which led through Germany , France , the Netherlands , Austria , Switzerland , Great Britain and Italy . The band was accompanied by Odroerir , Helfahrt , Tarabas , Strydegor , Elivagar , Encorion , Elexorien and Eisregen .

In July 2010 they played at the Rockharz Open Air , among others with End of Green , Subway to Sally , Krypteria and Burning Skies . Other concerts followed, including with the Latvian band Skyforger and the German dark metal band Eisregen . Then the band went back to the studio to work on their new album. The release date of the album called Weltenbrand - Die Banners hoch der Nacht gegenwart was originally set for October 2010. It finally appeared on April 29, 2011.

On November 27, 2010 Gernotshagen performed together with Blutnebel and Vagabond on the Hard as Iron in Bad Salzungen .

From April 16, 2011 to April 25, Gernotshagen took part in the Black Trolls Over Europe European tour together with Heljareyga , Skyforger , Kromlek , Northland and Nothgard , which also served as a promotional tour for the album that was released at the end of April.

style

Gernotshagen plays Pagan Metal mixed with the musical elements of Black Metal . Due to the sometimes intensive use of the keyboard, the music turns out to be very melodic. Her texts deal with Germanic mythology , life and death , but also love and suffering from ancient times. Especially on maires from wooded halls , the group tries to musically reflect their connection to the Thuringian nature and their own attitude to life. The singing is dominated by guttural singing , but occasionally there is also clear singing .
