action

Gerold "Gerry" Plassek works as a journalist for the regional newspaper "Tag für Tag" in St. Pölten. He has a drinking problem and has lost his zest for life, is an outspoken cynic and only ever does what is necessary to make ends meet. He spends a large part of his free time with his friends Sammy and Campari in Zoltan's bar.

One day he is supposed to take care of the 14-year-old Manuel Berner, the son of Alice Berner, an old friend while she is abroad for Doctors Without Borders . In addition, an anonymous benefactor donates large sums to those charitable organizations that Plassek's newspaper articles deal with. In a video conference, Alice Gerry confesses that Manuel is his son. With his son and the series of donations, Plassek is given another task.

Gerry accompanies Manuel to a party of his friend Machi, where he meets again Rebecca Fessler, Manuel's teacher, whom Plassek fell in love with at first sight when they met at school, and she tells him that she gives voluntary German lessons. Gerry reports in an article about her project "Tea with Hope", whereupon it is financially supported by the anonymous donor. As a thank you, she invites him to dinner. The two end up drunk in her bed, where he confesses his love to her and she falls asleep in his arms. The next day she tells him that she can't remember the night.

Manuel asks Gerold to do something about his alcohol problem. Manuel also tells him that his friend Machi and his family have gone into hiding because of imminent deportation. Manuel asks Gerry to write an article about it. The pastor, where the family has found shelter, would need a donation to pay the legal fees. Plassek learned from Nora Kunz from the editorial team of “Tag für Tag” that for political and economic reasons no refugee articles were printed in her paper. Plassek then submitted his resignation and started a video blog . Meanwhile, Manuel, with the support of Rebecca, starts a successful fundraising campaign for Machi's family and Gerold sets up a place for Machi's family in his apartment.

Rebecca admits to Gerold that, contrary to what she originally said, she can remember every detail of their night together, and a relationship develops between the two. Manuel Gerold also confesses that he knows that he is his father. In an email, the anonymous donor informed Plassek that he would like to support alcoholics with his last donation, also to calm his guilty conscience. Plassek arranges a meeting with the donor in Zoltan's bar, where Gerold is waiting for him to thank him for changing his life. When Zoltan wanted to close the bar for curfew, Gerold noticed that both Zoltan and the donor had used the term "donor" and Gerold thanks Zoltan.

reception

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv wrote that the plot would initially sound like the usual " Suddenly Papa " story. The film is a very Austrian film that takes no account of German sensitivities; some of the dialogues would be seriously incorrectly politically correct. Even after its purification, the main character only invites identification to a limited extent, but that's precisely why it's great fun. Prochaska tell the story with great attention to ironic detail. The small breaks in combination with the depressing color scheme and a defiant melancholy reminded of the mood that Ludwig Hirsch spread with his songs.

Wilfried Geldner found in the Weser Kurier that the character traits of a journalist who is disappointed in life may be more sensitive and ironic in the novel. Everything in the film has now turned into a black, humorous, pre-Christmas comedy with a lot of cynicism. You don't have to know that the idea for the film goes back to the miracle of Braunschweig , it tends to flatten the story and tell it afterwards. Much more exciting is the father-and-son game by Stipsits and Göbel, which fluctuates between benevolence and hate. Despite its Christmas sugar, this city comedy digs its way into the trench of a rousing misanthropist with a lot of cynicism and humor.

Arnold Hohmann said in the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung that the film for Daniel Prochaska's directorial debut had become an astonishingly safe production. From an Austrian productions in particular, one expects less emotion, rather an oblique look at reality, spiced with plenty of abuse . All of this can be made up for after the previously broadcast “Suddenly Papa” film The best papa in the world in the tragic comedy “Gift”.
