Road race accident in 1957

The 1957 Mille Miglia was a race on normal roads from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia. The race of 1957 entered its final phase when Alfonso de Portago had a serious accident : He was only about 50 km away from the finish line. Before Cerlango the road became more curvy, after leaving town there was a five-kilometer straight to Guidizzolo. De Portago was shot at full throttle when the car hit a milestone on the left and got out of control. The Ferrari crashed sideways into a telegraph pole, turned on its own axis and hit an embankment on the right with full force. De Portago no longer had a chance to slow down the rotating car. As always, thousands of spectators lined the route. Tragically, right at the scene of the accident, a group of locals with their children were standing very close to the narrow strip of asphalt when the Ferrari came to rest right there. There were eleven dead: de Portago died of the terrible cuts that the loose bonnet inflicted on him. His passenger and nine locals, including five children, died as a result of the accident at 4:04 p.m. 20 other people were injured, some seriously.

Consequences of the accident

The Mille Miglia was then abolished as a race: The criticism hit mainly Enzo Ferrari as the racing team owner involved and less the organizers. He was charged by the judiciary and only acquitted years later. The company owner felt the attacks were unjustified and largely withdrew from the public.
