GoldenEye 007 is a video game based on the movie James Bond 007 - Goldeneye . The game belongs to the genre of the first person shooter . It was developed by the British software company Rare and released on July 31, 1997 for the Nintendo 64 game console in the USA . A PAL version for Europe followed in the same year . Nintendo decided not to publish it in Germany, presumably so that it would not be indexed or confiscated (the Austrian packaging reads: "Not intended for the German market." ). Because the reviews of the game press were overwhelmingly good, many N64 players imported the game from Austria or the European region without further ado. Since the game convincingly depicts death scenes, the BPjS indicated it. The BPjS (now BPjM ) was able to review and index games that were not published in Germany at that time. The video game is also known as SilverEye in the German press (64Power) and the German fan scene . In this way it should be avoided that such reports could be interpreted as advertising.

GoldenEye was one of the best-selling first-person shooters at the time and demonstrated the revenue potential of interactive entertainment software: While the production of the film GoldenEye had devoured 60 million US dollars, which was then offset by 350 million box office revenues, the development costs of the game were only four million and the revenues were 230 million (over eight million modules sold worldwide).

action

Except for two bonus missions, the plot is similar to the plot of the film GoldenEye throughout the game , but the player also receives orders that are only mentioned in passing in the film, some details have been changed (compared to the film).

Missions

The game offers seven movie-like missions with a total of 18 levels and two additional bonus levels that can be unlocked. In addition, the game initially has three levels of difficulty (Agent, Secret Agent, 00 Agent), they differ in the strength of the opponents and in the number of mission tasks.

The 007 mode is unlocked when you have completed all 20 levels on all three levels of difficulty. There you can adjust the level of difficulty with four parameters, all of which affect the skills of the computer-controlled opponent:

  • Enemy Health (resistance of the enemy)
  • Enemy Damage (damage caused by enemy fire)
  • Enemy Accuracy (target accuracy of the enemy)
  • Enemy Reaction Speed (enemy reaction speed)

Gameplay

The game is based on classics of the genre such as Doom ; the opponents react to the player with increasing difficulty and shoot more precisely. The semi-automatic aiming aid typical of the console also reacts more slowly to a higher level of difficulty.

The controls were praised by many testers and gamers because they were complex, but still quite intuitive and precise. Several control modes have been built in (among other things, you can control GoldenEye with two gamepads at the same time - one gamepad in each hand - which, thanks to the special gamepad shape, suggests the feeling of holding two weapons in your hands). However, most players should have contented themselves with the standard controls.

You walk forwards and backwards with the analog stick, if you steer to the left or right, you turn (or the ego view) in the corresponding direction around your own axis. The Z trigger fires, the A button is responsible for changing weapons and the B button reloads and interacts with the game world (for example, opening a door or pressing a switch). With the C-keys you can correct the vertical line of sight and walk to the side ("strafing"). Alternatively, with the help of the R key, a crosshair can be displayed, with which an opponent can then be targeted manually. This was particularly important for the use of the sniper rifle , a weapon that was previously very rarely used in video games - this control concept was something of a revolution in the genre of first-person shooters.

Otherwise, the game offered revolutionary innovations for the time: For example, you can get into a tank and drive through a level, fire projectiles and run over enemy opponents. In addition, many Bond-typical gadgets found their way into the game (a watch with a built-in laser that can cut metal; the golden gun, which kills an opponent with one hit, and mines that can be detonated by remote control). In addition, the game includes a very large arsenal of weapons, which ranges from throwing knives to various machine guns to a rocket launcher.

An extensive multiplayer mode is also available. Up to four players can play against or with each other in different game modes in the split screen . You have to do without computer-controlled opponents (so-called bots). Progress in single player mode will be rewarded with additional selectable characters, weapons and arenas for multiplayer mode.

Cheats are unlocked in a very unconventional way. It is important to complete a level within a certain time limit to unlock a cheat. This may be easy with a little practice for most missions, but for a few the time limit can only be achieved by memorizing the level and location of the opponents and a dose of luck. Cheats that have already been played may not be used, the corresponding attempts are not counted.

Little by little, Rare released keyboard shortcuts that can also unlock these cheats. The advantage of these cheats is that they can be entered in the pause menu during individual levels and the missions were still rated as if you had played without cheats. So it was possible for less experienced players to "play through" the game.

technology

The game was remarkable for the time: the digital counterpart of Pierce Brosnan could be recognized as such, and the rest of the actors in the film were also captured quite well. The game also did not suffer from the usual problems of early N64 games (later graphics structure, fogging - negative example: Turok ). Only the frame rate was unstable every now and then, which was still within the tolerable range. The game was designed with great attention to detail: when you pause, Bond looks at his watch, threatened civilians shake their knees and the game starts with a shot into the camera, as is typical of Bond. The death scenes of the opponents were very explicit and varied for the time; so an opponent hit in the neck takes hold of the wound, sags and writhes for a while in pain. Because of these sequences, among other things, the game was indexed in Germany. However, there was very little blood to be seen in Goldeneye - compared, for example, to Doom , which even had body parts hanging from the ceiling. Only the clothing turned a little dark red in the event of a gunshot wound - here too Rare paid close attention to realism.

reception

GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 is still considered to be one of the best first-person shooters of all time and generally received very good ratings. The Metascore is 96 out of 100 possible points, the average rating on GameRankings is 94%. IGN rated GoldenEye 007 with 97%, GameSpot awarded 98% and Edge 9 out of 10 possible points. The new editions of the game that appeared in recent years could not come close to the ratings of the original, for example the Xbox 360 and PS3 remakes only have a mediocre metascore of 72.

successor

The title Perfect Dark , which was published by Rare 2000 for the N64, is considered a quasi-successor . Rare had lost the Bond license to EA in the late 1990s and created its own franchise out of this need. Perfect Dark sold very well (over 2.5 million copies), but lagged far behind its predecessor.

In 2004 Electronic Arts released a James Bond game under the title GoldenEye: Rogue Agent , which, however, has nothing in common with GoldenEye 007 except for the title and the James Bond theme . Electronic Arts likely used the GoldenEye title as a marketing strategy to get buyers and fans of the first game to buy.

Hobby developers are developing a modification for Half-Life 2 based on the Source Engine . The Mod GoldenEye: Source is a largely faithful new edition. With the current version, published in December 2010, the beta phase has been completed.

indexing

GoldenEye was indexed by the BPjS on April 1, 1998 due to the death scenes and the fact that violence was used against people ( glorification of violence ). In Germany, this game may neither be advertised nor freely displayed in the store. The game was available without restrictions in Austria and Switzerland .
