Good for You is a song by the American singer Selena Gomez and the American rapper A $ AP Rocky . It is the first single from the second solo album Revival, which was released in autumn 2015 . The single was released on June 22, 2015, the accompanying music video on June 26, 2015.
Creation and publication
"Good for You" was written by Selena Gomez , Julia Michaels (who previously worked on Slow Down and Undercover) and Justin Trainer, and was produced by Sir Nolan and Nick Monson. It is the first single that Selena Gomez released under her new record label Interscope Records and the first single that Gomez recorded with a rapper.
The first rumors of a new album and a new single emerged in November 2014 after she announced the end of her collaboration with Hollywood Records and announced the move to Interscope Records.
Selena Gomez recorded Good for You in just 45 minutes. In Good for You she realizes her development of self-realization, her confidence as a young woman and her feelings of vulnerability. She further said, "This is a piece where I feel what a woman should simply embody, but not in the usual way."
In an interview with the radio station WHTZ , Gomez described her view of Good for You: “When I recorded the song, there was no feature. I don't even think there was a plan for a feature. I recorded the track, I responded to it so much that I had the entire team who wrote the song come to Mexico and finish the album with me because it was the perfect way and the perfect tone that's set for this next chapter for me. And then once it was done, I could not help but want somebody on it. And I'm obsessed with A $ AP Rocky's new album. [.....] So I slipped it to him and next thing you know he responded really well. ""
On June 9, 2015, Gomez posted a picture entitled "Ready .. #itscomingsoon". It shows a sequence from the video for Good for You in which she is pensively in a shower. A few days later she published more pictures of sequences from the music video with the title "'Good For You." JUNE 22. Now who would like the first look of my new music video? "And" GOOD FOR YOU. JUNE 22. #IMready “.
On June 18, a video with the subtitle “I feel like I can exhale”, which she shows in a studio , appeared on her Instagram page. She speaks the following sentences into a microphone: “But I'm blinded by the sun. I'm reborn in every moment, so who knows what I'll become? ”This is followed by very deep bass tones (untypical for Gomez's music style). Many music journalists suggested that this was the intro of the song.
On June 19, the cover for the single was published on Gomez's Twitter page. It shows her sitting barefoot in front of a white wall on a stool and only wearing a white XXL T-shirt. Idolator's Mike Wass praised the cover as it cemented Gomez's sex appeal and maturity. He thinks the next phase of her career will shock her long-term fans in a positive way and the cover does its part. "Music Times" praised the cover for the beautiful and natural look of Gomez. During the day, more and more sequences from the music video were released, which Gomez also personally sent to fans. Good for You had its official premiere on the radio station iHeartRadio.
During a Q&A on Good For You, Gomez announced that it was one of the first songs to be chosen for their new album, and they also chose Good For You as their first single because it set the tone for the new album and a mix out of Gomez's wishes, which is that the first single must be sexy and full of pleasure.
Genre
“Good for You” can be classified as a mid-tempo and pop - slow-jam piece that also contains elements of electro and R&B . The percussion instruments , the drum machine , the synthesizer and a sparse bass are also striking in the piece . Compared to Gomez's other songs, Good for You has a very dark flair.
criticism
Milke Wass from Idolator praised the song as a rock-cold blow, which completely reinvented Gomez's sound and said that it was hardly recognizable. He also praises her new, more mature style of music. He also praises the abnormal artistic balance of the genres as a refreshing original anthem and jokes that Stars Dance feels light years away in contrast to Good for You. The only negative thing he criticized was the rap part of A $ AP Rocky. He described it as a bit forced but still pleasant to listen to. USA Today voted Good for You their single of the week.
Music video
The music video was directed by Sophie Muller , who is already known for her work with numerous stars such as Beyoncé , Lana del Rey and Ellie Goulding . Filming began in early June 2015. Gomez said about the music video that it is very sensual and bursting with strength and motivation. The music video contains a remixed version of Good for You and the part of A $ AP Rocky is missing.
On August 19th an Explicit Video was released on VEVO, which contains the original version of Good for You as well as the rap part of A $ AP Rocky.
Charts and sales
The evening after its release, Good for You reached number 1 on the iTunes charts. In the week of its release, it entered the German charts at number 58. In the second week it rose 19 places, to 29th place and is therefore her most successful single in the German charts according to Naturally .
