The graphic collection of the city of Nuremberg was founded in 1971 and has been part of the network of museums of the city of Nuremberg since 1994 . The graphic collection has been part of the city of Nuremberg's art collections since 2013 .

Stocks

The collection holds over 120,000 objects, mainly drawings and prints. It is thus the most extensive collection of image sources on Nuremberg's city history and complements the documents stored in the Nuremberg city archive. Before the independent collection was founded, graphic works of art were repeatedly given to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum for safekeeping in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries . The collection areas include topographical sheets, cultural history, artist graphics and a portrait collection as well as a special collection on Albrecht Dürer's afterlife.

The collection, arranged according to topographical keywords, contains extensive image material on the former imperial city of Nuremberg and its rural area. The stock of topographical views (prospectuses) illustrates the development of the cityscape from the late 15th century to the present day.

Artist graphic

The graphic collection owns the graphic works of artists working in Nuremberg from the late 16th century to the present in rare completeness. Engravings, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and watercolors, gouaches and drawings were systematically collected. Important engravers of the 17th and 18th centuries such as Johann Alexander Böner or Johann Adam Delsenbach are almost completely available, as are the etchings by artists of the 19th century such as Johann Adam Klein or Johann Christoph Erhard . The collection of works by the brothers Georg Christoph and Johann Christoph Jakob Wilder is extensive . Nuremberg art of the later 19th and 20th centuries is also well represented.

Portrait collection

The collection of portrait engravings, primarily of Nuremberg personalities , especially from the time of the imperial city, is clearly indexed by means of double indexing - according to artist names and the names of the persons depicted.

The Albrecht Dürer House Foundation in the Graphic Collection

The Albrecht Dürer House Foundation was founded in 1871 as part of the celebrations for Albrecht Dürer's 400th birthday . Their primary goal was initially to furnish the badly dilapidated Albrecht Dürer House and make it accessible to the public. Since the redesign in 1971, the main task of the foundation has been to acquire evidence of the history of Dürer's impact and afterlife and to provide financial support for the design of the Dürer House. Since 1971, in collaboration with the foundation, the world's most extensive collection on the artist's afterlife has been created. The holdings are continuously updated. The foundation also owns probably the best Dürer special library ever.

building

The graphic collection of the city of Nuremberg is currently housed in the former administration building of the Tafelwerk at Äußere Sulzbacher Strasse 60 in Nuremberg. The collection is a scientific reference collection without fixed opening times. However, a visit and presentation of graphic works of art is possible at any time by appointment. The building was erected in 1922 by Hans Müller as the administration building for the Julius Tafel iron rolling mill . It also houses the painting and sculpture collection of the city of Nuremberg and the administration of the Museum of Industrial Culture .

management

Since 2003 the graphic collection has been under joint management with the Albrecht Dürer House . The art historian Thomas Schauerte was in charge of the collection from 2009 to 2009 .

Exhibitions

As a scientific study collection, the Graphic Collection does not have a permanent presentation. In order to nevertheless present the rich holdings of the collection to the public, changing exhibitions on specific subject areas or individual artists are presented in the Albrecht Dürer House or in one of the other museums of the city of Nuremberg as well as in other institutions. 2006: For Dürer at its best. New acquisitions by the Albrecht Dürer House Foundation. Exhibition of the graphic collection in the Albrecht Dürer House. (January 20 to April 30, 2006).

2006: Romantic Discoveries - Johann Adam Klein (1792–1875). Paintings, drawings, prints. Exhibition of the graphic collection in the Stadtmuseum Fembohaus. (July 28th to November 26th, 2006).

2008: "Lust and love moved me ...". Nuremberg garden culture. Exhibition of the graphic collection in the Stadtmuseum Fembohaus. (September 5 to November 23, 2008).
