The Hôtel Byron was the first hotel in Villeneuve in the Swiss canton of Vaud in 1841 and later became a renowned health resort. The hotel was closed by 1929, the building was used by Chillon College and destroyed by fire in 1933. An existing outbuilding now serves as a senior citizens' residence.

The building was located opposite Chillon Castle north of today's city center of Villeneuve on the shores of Lake Geneva . Aimon, son of Thomas I of Savoy , had built a ducal house here in the 13th century. To the west of the hotel, directly on the lake, runs the Simplon line and Avenue du Chillon , where the former Clos du Moulin tram stop , which has been served by the Vevey – Montreux – Chillon – Villeneuve trolleybus line since 1958, is located . In a southerly direction, the gently sloping Avenue de Byron leads to the center of Villeneuve, which is about 400 meters away, as well as the train station and the pier.

construction

In 1837 Vincent Masson-Vallon, a trader from Vevey and a citizen of Veytaux , confirmed the construction of the hotel in a letter to the executive architect Jean Marc Louis Junod . On February 14, 1840, the hotel was advertised for rent in the Gazette de Lausanne and opened in June of the following year. With its inauguration on May 27, 1841, it was the first hotel to establish tourism in the town. From 1839 the hotel was named after George Gordon Byron , known as Lord Byron, who had died in 1824 but had resided in the region several times. It was the first hotel complex in Switzerland to be built in complete isolation. The building, with its classic architecture, had a magnificent hall, spacious salons and richly furnished apartments and was at that time the largest hotel on the Vaudois Riviera . The 15 window axes are distributed over a three-axis side elevation on both sides and a three-axis central elevation in the middle with a loggia in front , with three-axis intermediate wings in between. The kitchen was in the basement.

Use as a hotel

In the course of 1841 547 families stayed at the Byron. The first owner had hoped to use a sulfur spring, but had to give up ruined. Johann Jacob Weber wrote in 1854 that “the builder of his company perished.” At the end of January 1843, the owner tried to auction the hotel and associated buildings. Auctions were prohibited in the cantons of Vaud and Geneva , which is why this was put out to tender and guaranteed by the municipality of Menzingen in the canton of Zug . The seller was accused of exaggerating the price estimate of CHF 1,200,000. The government of the Canton of Vaud estimated the value of the hotel at 120,000 Swiss francs , outbuildings and mansions at a further 27,000 francs and the associated estate with vineyards and tree gardens at 100,000 francs. The furniture was assigned a value of 56,000 francs. On February 3, 1843, the Allgemeine Zeitung München reported that lovers of the hotel had accepted shares and paid for the change in the head office. The hotel's furniture was put up for auction on May 14 and 20, 1844, and the building was put up for sale again in 1845. In 1846 the municipality of Villeneuve rejected the application to set up a casino in the hotel .

The reopening of the hotel was announced for July 1, 1849 by the widow Monney, who also advertised the sulfur spring, but travel guides classified the hotel as out of date. In 1850 Charles Boet announced the renovation of the house, in 1853 the travel guides revised their opinion after the construction of a bath. In 1857 Villeneuve received a railway connection with the opening of the rail connection to Bex by the Compagnie de l'Ouest Suisse , in 1861 the connection to Lausanne was completed as part of the Simplon line . In March 1861 it was announced that M. Wolff had taken over the hotel from Curtin de la Rottaz. Wolff ran the business with his brother Gustave, a North German who also ran the Hôtel de l'Écu in Geneva . At that time it was advertised with parks and gardens, a reading room and billiards . The two Wolffs and their successors failed, so it was closed for a while. In 1868, however , George Bradshaw wrote of a high reputation, of weekly church services in English alternating with the Hôtel des Alpes and of omnibus connections from the hotel to all passenger trains running at Villeneuve station, and permission to set up a telegraph office was granted. Transport with our own buses was also offered to the pier for passenger shipping on Lake Geneva and to nearby excursion destinations. In 1870 it was recommended as a spa hotel, although the sulfur spring in Villeneuve was not used. From 1872, regular advertisements in the Gazette de Lausanne and Journal de Genève again named G. Wolff as the owner, who in April 1876 announced the transfer of the hotel to M. Emmerling, who continued to run it from May together with Rusterholz.

Even before it was connected to the local gas supply in 1876, the Hôtel Byron had a gas system. In 1880 a weekly pigeon shooting was advertised, a year later the then owner Jean-Jacques de la Rottaz announced the transfer of management to Armleder Cadet. In 1882 some foreign and local medical professionals considered buying the hotel and converting it into a sanatorium . After the telephone network in Montreux went into operation in the summer of 1883, a connection to the hotel was also planned. In 1885 the sale of the hotel to liquidate an inheritance was announced, but not carried out. In July 1889 the connection to the electricity supply in Montreux followed with an overhead line that was very popular at the time . From 1896 thought was given to rebuilding the road between Villeneuve and Chillon in order to enable the extension of the tram and to be able to dispense with the accident-prone level crossing in front of the hotel. On April 1, 1897, the hotel was sold for 375,000 francs to the then director Hermann Gehrig, who had been running it next to the Grand-Hôtel des Rochers de Naye since November 1, 1885 . In the same year it was sold to a stock corporation for 400,000 francs .

Extensive modernization was carried out between 1896 and 1899, which left the core of the building intact, but gave it the character of a new building: a glazed gallery was added along the entire length of the building on the lake side, and the previous portico was rebuilt on the north side. In addition, there were technical improvements, and the central heating and elevator added in 1898 were advertised . The furniture was already offered for sale in February 1899 and the hotel was refurbished after the renovation. In the spring of 1900, the hotel acquired a Panhard type automobile with ten seats for operation on the main road 9 from Villeneuve to Veytaux and to Chillon Castle ; at the Fête des Narcisses , a 20-minute cycle was offered, after which regular trips were continued . In Chillon there was a connection to the then tram Vevey – Montreux – Chillon (VMC) to the tourist centers in Montreux and Vevey. On December 14, 1903, this was extended via the Byron stop at the hotel to Villeneuve with the then independent tram Chillon – Byron – Villeneuve (CBV). Gehrig, who remained director of the hotel, left it on July 1, 1906. In 1912, an outbuilding with bathrooms was built, which is the only building that still exists today. In 1923 an advertisement for the hotel promised warm water in all rooms, tennis, croquet and golf as well as an eight and a half hectare park, later it was called the Grand Hotel. In 1926 consideration was given to creating a beach below the hotel, which was inaugurated on June 26, 1927.

In May 1929 the sale of the hotel and the furniture was announced, which was approved by the shareholders' meeting on June 23. The buyer for 800,000 francs was the Chillon College from nearby Grandchamp , the handover was set for October 1st. The hotel advertised its services until July, and the liquidation of the corporation was announced in December.

Chillon College

As a result, the building was used by the Institut de jeunes gens de Chillon College, in which several hundred students, mainly from the English colonial area, were taught. The Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times called it the " Eton of Switzerland".

On the night of January 23rd to 24th, 1933, the main building was destroyed by a devastating fire and was never rebuilt.

Fire disaster

On January 24, 1933, about 15 minutes after midnight, the police stations of the surrounding municipalities were alerted about a fire in the roof structure of the hotel, and the fire brigade from Villeneuve could not do anything about the fire due to iced hydrants until around 0:30 a.m. Veytaux were on site, who installed a 600 meter long pipe to the only usable hydrant. The nearby lake water of Lake Geneva could not be used because no suction pumps were available nearby and a train had been announced for 1:30 am for the Simplon route between the hotel and the lake. The fire had started in the roof of the four-story building, the spread was made easier by various pieces of wood on the attic. The following day it was assumed that a defective chimney or a fire that had not been set off the previous evening was the reason for the ignition, especially since an explosion in a chimney could be heard around 11 p.m. the previous day. Because of the height of the source of the fire , the extinguishing efforts proved to be useless and three quarters of an hour after the fire broke out, the roof structure collapsed and the fire spread to the lower floors. The fire was under control around four in the morning, but the upper floors had already been given up and were now limited to rescuing the first floor . At dawn, the fire brigade from Châtelard relieved its tired colleagues and a pump from Bex replaced the one from Aigle . The boarding school students of the Institut de jeunes gens de Chillon-Collège were able to leave the building undamaged and helped to rescue the furniture.

The total financial damage was given as 750,352 francs.

After the disaster, consideration was given to rebuilding the building in a modern style using reinforced concrete. In 1938 the site was put up for sale. The annex, built in 1912, was used as a rest home from the 1970s and is now used as the Le Byron nursing home and retirement home . This is recognized by the health department and a member of the ASCOR care network. Despite the rededication, no major changes were made.

Reception and guests

The noble hotel appeared in the Baedeker travel guide for the first time in 1844 , which, however, describes it as out of order as early as 1848: “Between Chillon and Villeneuve, the Hotel Byron, built a few years ago as a great inn, but quickly deteriorated, stretches its barren walls into the air. “After an unsuccessful time, the supplement The Collector to the Augsburger Abendzeitung from 1865 counts the Byron back to the world-famous inns in Switzerland. In 1869 Hermann Reimer emphasized the suitability as a winter health resort, the fresh, wonderful location and the highest level of comfort, but criticized the loneliness and the lack of morning sun. In 1887 a guide initiated by George Bradshaw described it as a first class hotel in an excellent location, which was also the closest accommodation to Chillon Castle . The hotel was used several times for congresses and meetings.

The guests in the hotel were Franz Liszt , Otto von Bismarck , Ernest Renan , Henryk Sienkiewicz , the wife of the physicist John Hopkinson during his funeral and Richard Wagner , who experienced “a strange catastrophe of his fate here in 1850.” Giuseppe Garibaldi stayed in September 1867 from Coming from the Simplon Pass on the way to Geneva in the Byron . After his stay, for which a visit with 450 people was organized, Victor Hugo considered making the “hotel with the lovely park” his retreat, as the veteran TF Gibbs, well-known in Montreux, actually did. Romain Rolland lived from 1922 to 1938 in the Villa Olga, which belongs to the hotel, and received there, among others, Mahatma Gandhi and Stefan Zweig . The hotel was also visited by Edgar Quinet , Elisée Reclus , Gustave Courbet , Waldo Frank , Ossip Gabrilowitsch , Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , Thomas Morland and Rabindranath Tagore .

In his book Rollo in Geneva , the American youth writer Jacob Abbott describes how the protagonists view the park with its wide gravel paths, the terraces and the celebrations of the guests and the offspring who are looked after by nannies.
