The Bahnhof Essen-Stadtwald is a transit stop in Essen district city forest .

history

With the commissioning of the Essen-Werden – Essen railway , which connects the Ruhr Valley Railway with Essen Central Station , the Rellinghausen BM station opened on August 15, 1877 , with BM standing for the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . The former Rellinghausen Abbey, which was still independent, was located to the east and gave it its name. In 1897 the name was changed to Rellinghausen West after the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn had already been dissolved.

When Rellinghausen was incorporated into the city of Essen in 1910 and since then the train station has been in what is now the Stadtwald district, it was given the current name of Essen-Stadtwald on January 1, 1911 .

The station is controlled from the Esf signal box. The type DrS2 relay interlocking, which was put into operation in 1968 , has been remote-controlled from the Ef interlocking in Essen main station since 1977.

East access through a residential building

Today, the station is served by the S-Bahn line S6 (route book routes 450.6) for local rail passenger transport. It is on the Essen-Werden-Essen railway line . In the operating point directory of Deutsche Bahn , the station has the abbreviation EESA and is listed as a station in station category  4 (as of January 1, 2017) .

The two platforms are from the eastern to the railroad station building accessible from the postwar period with a pedestrian overpass. Southbound route passes under the station exit in the 247-meter-long single-track urban forest tunnel the city woodland course .

Transfer relationships to bus traffic

The station is not served directly in the Ruhrbahn network . Ruhrbahn bus lines and rail replacement buses serve the Stadtwaldplatz stop around 400 meters south, near the south portal of the single-track Stadtwald tunnel. Bus routes 142, 144, 145, taxi buses 175 and 194 and the NE7 night network operate there. The Stadtwaldplatz thus represents a junction of the relations Kettwig / Haarzopf - Bredeney - Rüttenscheid  ( Messe ) - Stadtwaldplatz - Rellinghausen - Steele - Kray and Stadtmitte - Stadtwaldplatz - Heisingen .
