Life

Born as the son of the chief bailiff Wilhelm Friedrich Maier , he studied law in Tübingen after attending elementary school in Heilbronn and grammar schools in Ulm and Esslingen as well as his time as an intern at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Urach . During his studies he became a member of the Normannia Tübingen Association in 1910 . In 1914 he was a war volunteer in the infantry regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm, King of Prussia" (2nd Württembergisches) No. 120 and later with the field artillery regiment "König Karl" (1st Württembergisches) No. 13 in Ulm and with the replacement field artillery Regiment No. 65, with which he took part in the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme , among others . He received the Iron Cross II. Class and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Frederick with Swords. In 1918 he suffered a serious wound, which ended the First World War for him .

After his exams and at the end of his legal clerkship, he became deputy public prosecutor in Göppingen in 1920 and deputy magistrate at the Nürtingen regional office in 1921 and at the Laupheim regional office in 1922 . In 1923 he went as a bailiff, and Councilor to the upper office Oberndorf . From 1923 to 1929 he was several times administrative clerk at the Sulz Oberamt , then from November 1929 to August 1935 Oberamtverweser at the Oberamt Spaichingen , where there was no scheduled appointment as district administrator due to the planned dissolution of the Oberamt . In 1933 he became a member of the NSDAP (No. 3144980) and the NSKK . From 1933 to 1945 he was a member of the Nazi legal guardians' association , and in 1935 an assessor at the Spaichingen district court and chairman of the Spaichingen district administration of the Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation .

In August 1935 he moved from the district office Spaichingen to District Office Nuertingen and was there first Temporary Administrator before in December 1935, district administrator of the district Nürtingen was appointed. During his tenure as Nürtingen District Administrator, the district reform took place on October 1, 1938, during which the neighboring Kirchheim district was dissolved and largely added to the Nürtingen district. From 1938 to 1945 Helmuth Maier was a volunteer district leader of the DRK district association Nürtingen-Kirchheim.

On April 23, 1945, he was arrested and interned by the security service of the American military government . He then did not return to public service. The retirement gave Maier the opportunity to devote himself even more intensively than before, now also commercially, to family research. Maier was also an active member of the Nürtingen local group of the Swabian Homeland Federation and from 1948 an advisory member of the Nürtingen district maintenance authority of the Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation.

His genealogical contribution in the Heimatbuch des Kreis Nürtingen (1953) and the representation of the established Sindelfingen families with 188 lineages from 1500 to 1950 (1962) were exemplary in their schematic arrangement and with the consideration of the population changes after the Second World War . Maier also made a special contribution to the then Association for Family and Heraldry in Württemberg and Baden eV , which is why it made him an honorary member at its 40th annual meeting in 1963.
