Daendels studied law at the University of Harderwijk . As a supporter of the patriots he took part in the unrest that broke out in the Netherlands in 1787 , so when the cause of the patriots was defeated he had to flee and engaged in happy trade speculations in Dunkirk . In 1793 he rendered important services as lieutenant colonel to General Dumouriez on his campaign against Holland, became brigadier general in 1794 , took the island of Bommel and Fort St. Andreas on the new campaign against Holland under Jean-Charles Pichegru (1795), joined after the proclamation of the Batavian Republic as divisional general in their service and exercised a significant influence in the government and constitutional changes. As an opponent of the democratic party, which was at the helm, he went to Paris and from there was sent back to Holland by the French Directory to initiate a new revolution for the aristocracy, which he succeeded. With General Brune he operated successfully against the English and Russians in North Holland in 1799 , which he wrote about in his "Rapport des opérations du lieutenant-général Daendels, depuis le 22 août jusqu'à la capitulation de l'armée anglaise et russe, le 18 octobre 1799 ”reported.

Hostility induced him to submit his release in 1803. At the outbreak of the war of 1806 he received the command of a division from the King of Holland and in October seized East Frisia and Westphalia , for which he was appointed General of the Cavalry and in February 1807 Marshal of Holland and Governor General of the colony of the Dutch East Indies , the he managed with care and energy from 1808 until the English invasion of 1811. Accused of several arbitrary acts, he was recalled and published 4 volumes of files on his administration. In 1812 he took part in the Russian campaign under Napoleon I and led the IX. Corps of the Grande Armée the 26th Division. In 1813, as governor of the Modlin Fortress , he defended the same to the extreme. In his fatherland he applied in vain for a military post; It was not until October 1815 that he was commissioned to organize the management of the repurchased properties on the African Gold Coast . He behaved very energetically here, encouraged the creation of new plantings and hindered the slave trade as much as he could . He died on May 2, 1818.
