The Herrenmoor near Kleve is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Kleve , Moorhusen , Nutteln and Vaalermoor in the Steinburg district .

The nature reserve was designated in its current size at the end of 1995 (date of the regulation: December 19, 1995). It replaces the nature reserve, which was designated in its core as early as 1938 and which was then 13 hectares in size. The nature reserve is almost completely part of the FFH area "Vaaler Moor and Herrenmoor". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Steinburg district.

The nature reserve is on the edge of the Elbmarsch in the transition area to Heide-Itzehoer Geest . It provides a dehydrated and some were dug bog rest under protection, was once part of Elbrandmoore extending along the Geest edge of Heiligenstedten to Kudensee extended. In the 18th and 19th centuries, large areas of the Elbrand moors were drained and pitted to produce fuel. In the middle of the 19th century, the areas were then settled, which led to an intensification of drainage.

The nature reserve is essentially shaped by the remains of the raised bog of the Herrenmoors and the adjacent wet grassland areas . The bog areas are partially covered with bushes, partially foul forest . Since the 1990s, the marsh areas are rewetted to see the Moor radicals and to regenerate. Peat mosses grow again in the water-filled peat cuttings . Furthermore, moor grass corridors and Gagelstrauch to find stocks and other typical marsh plants such as cotton grasses occur.

The Herrenmoor is also the habitat of numerous bird , reptile , amphibian and invertebrate species. The moor frog is at home again through rewetting measures . Also Adders occur. The bog owl and snipe use the moor as a breeding habitat .

As part of the bog protection program of the Land Schleswig-Holstein are renatured bog land in the summer months with White Polled Heath and goats grazed to the scattering and herb layer thinning and a dogged reach of coming on woody growth. The grassland areas, which also serve as a buffer zone for the bog areas, are often still managed, but after they are no longer used they should be included in renaturation measures or have already been carefully watered down. This allowed sedges to spread again.

Part of the Klevhang is also included in the nature reserve. The conditions here are dry. On the Klevhang there are oaks in low forest and near-natural forest stands. Besides are hem companies, heaths and grasslands to find. The line of the Marschbahn runs between the moor and grassland area and the Geest slope .

The moor and grassland area is criss-crossed by numerous ditches . It is drained via the moor ditch and moor canal to the Wilster Au and the Kiel Canal .

Several paths run through the nature reserve. In the south there is an observation point that can also be reached by motor vehicle.
