Wedding in Weltzow is a German literary film adaptation by Georgi Kissimov from 1979 . It is based on the story of the same name by Günter de Bruyn .

action

The 20-year-old Berliner Wilhelm, known as Willi, comes from a two-year captivity to the Havelland village of Weltzow, where he knows a former comrade from the front in Hans Graber. Hans is now a teacher and arranges work for Willi at the innkeeper Brunzel. His daughter, Mrs. Leidenfrost, has been a widow for five years because her husband fell at the front. Over time, she begins to take pleasure in Willi, but Willi is not aware of it. He is interested in the seamstress Ulla, but skipped their first meeting when he found out in the pub that Ulla had an illegitimate child.

Willi befriends the village servants and pretends to be Catholic in front of the village priest, so that he can receive one of the coveted CARE packages . At the same time, he is now forced to go to the trade fair regularly, but this is also made easier with gifts from CARE packages. One day, Willi is supposed to organize chairs and tables for Hans at school. On his way through the village he also passes the farm of the Dickkopp family. She had once taken him to the village in her horse-drawn carriage. Daughter Elvira now asks him into the room. It quickly becomes clear that she is in love with Willi. Her attempt to seduce him fails because her parents suddenly return. However, both continue their secret relationship in the pub, where they end up in widow Leidenfrost's double bed. This surprises both of them and shortly afterwards all the inn guests stand in horror in the bedroom door. Willi saves the situation by pretending to have just become engaged to Elvira.

In the following years the servants avoid the new "master" Willi, who is fed by the Dickkopp family. Although he has doubts about the relationship, especially since mother Dickkopp is in charge of the house and Elvira announces that she wants to match her after the marriage, he does not want to break his word to Elvira. Hans' advice to go to the Landow estate was rejected. He briefly breaks his engagement when the nagging about every one of his actions becomes too much for him, but mother Dickkopp can appease him. Since Willi is allegedly Catholic, but the bride is Protestant, there is a dispute about how the wedding should take place. With much praise and flattery, the priest asserts that the wedding will be a Catholic - the first in Weltzow since the Reformation. Before the marriage, Willi has to go to confession. The priest quickly realizes that Willi has no idea how a confession goes. Willi, in turn, admits that he is not Catholic, but was only after the CARE packages. He also doesn't love Elvira, but is only with her because he likes to eat. In general, he could not do anything with the basic attitude of the Dickkopps - himself, but not share anything. At the end of the confession, Willi decided against the wedding. The priest gives him absolution and Willi flees from a side entrance of the church in front of the waiting wedding crowd. He changed his clothes and went out of the village to visit the Landow estate. On the way he meets Ulla and her child, who also want to get out of Weltzow. He joins them.
