The national emblem of the Republic of China (or Taiwan ) has been in use since 1928 and represents the “blue sky with the white sun” ( Chinese 青天 白日 ). It consists of a blue disk with a white sun inside . Twelve rays emanate from this sun. These twelve rays represent the twelve months of the year and the 12 traditional Chinese hours , one of which corresponds to two of the hours we know. The sun is supposed to symbolize freedom . The colors white and blue represent two of the three principles of the people - prosperity and democracy.

The same image is also shown in the jack of the flag of the Republic of China, as well as the party flag and party symbol of the Kuomintang . It also gives its name to the Order of the Blue Sky and the White Sun , a military order established by the Republic of China and Taiwan in 1929.
