The Honda DN-01 is a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Honda . The cruiser was presented as a design study at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2005 and as a series machine at the EICMA in Milan in 2007 . Sales started in Japan and Europe in 2008, in the USA in 2009. The abbreviation DN is derived from Dream New Concept , the factory code is RC55.

Conception

The DN-01 is conceptually a mixture of motorcycle and scooter, with the long wheelbase of 1605 mm and the unconventional body speaking against the classification as a motorcycle. The DN-01 lacks a storage compartment and weather protection to characterize it as a motor scooter ; it is too underpowered for a classic cruiser. In 2008 only 150 motorcycles were delivered to Germany. The press officer from Honda Aaron Lang justified the low sales figures as follows: "The vehicle should be a technology carrier from the start , a study that was allowed to become reality - without the necessity of large sales figures." Production was stopped just two years after the start of sales.

construction

drive

The DN-01 is powered by the technically modified engine of the Honda NT 700V Deauville and Honda XL 700 V Transalp . The liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 45 kW (61 hp) and a maximum torque of 64 Nm at a speed of 6000 min −1 from a displacement of 680 cm³ . The transversely installed V-engine has a cylinder angle of 52 degrees. The two cylinders of the four-stroke engine have a bore 81 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 66 mm with a compression ratio of 10: 1. Each cylinder head has an overhead camshaft that controls two intake and two exhaust valves via rocker arms.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 170 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive via gears, the force and torque conversion by a separation as Human Friendly Transmission (HFT) designated continuously variable transmission . A centrifugal clutch transfers the engine's torque to a hydraulic pump that generates hydraulic pressure. A hydraulic motor converts the hydraulic pressure back into drive power. The secondary drive takes place via an internal cardan drive .

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 12 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 450 watts.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by a computer-controlled fuel injection called Programmed Fuel Injection ( PGM-FI ) . The average fuel consumption is 6.9 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 15.1 liters, of which 3 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane and specifies a theoretical range of 217 km.

The exhaust gas aftertreatment of the two-chamber exhaust system is carried out by a regulated catalytic converter and falls below the emission limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard .

landing gear

The chassis is built on a double loop frame made of steel tubes and has a single-sided swing arm made of aluminum at the rear. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 41 mm standpipe diameter.

A double disc brake with three-piston floating calipers decelerates on the front tire, and a disc brake with two-piston floating caliper at the rear. A combined, as CBS designated anti-lock braking system supports the delay on both brakes.

Reviews

“What now - fish or meat? Neither, somehow the DN-01 sits between all chairs. Honda pairs the high-tech gearbox with too little horsepower and offers it in the wrong motorcycle. The question remains, who does the company want to sell this machine to? Chopper and cruiser drivers will hardly be able to get used to the design. Scooter riders miss the passage and the storage space under the bench and complain about the too large dimensions for city traffic. The two-wheeler finds a strenuous sitting posture, but neither weather protection nor possibilities for luggage transport. "

- Jürgen Schons : Touring driver

“It's actually a shame that the DN-01 won't have a large fan base. Honda, the manufacturer from whom one could least expect it, has achieved an avant-garde design innovation. But then the chance was wasted, a fantastic transmission combined with a weak motor and built into a Far Eastern divan. "

- Jochen Vorfelder : Spiegel Online

“The DN-01 is less suitable for traveling: The range of accessories includes a navigation system, but no luggage system. There's a passenger backrest for this. The recommended retail price for Honda is 11,790 euros, including CBS ABS. A lot of money for an otherwise largely useless vehicle that is far more of a motorcycle than a scooter. The vehicle is always exclusive. "

- ADAC

“The DN-01 pilot can only dream of lean angles and a sporty chassis. His sedan chair speaks cleanly and synchronously, but with its overall design it is on the very comfortable side. That means, two bumps in a row are enough and the spring elements go on block. "
