The Honda NM4 Vultus is a fully faired motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The cruiser was presented to the press on March 24th 2014 at the 30th Motorcycle Show in Osaka and from March 28th to the public as a design study at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show . Sales started in June 2014. The Latin sales name Vultus means face , gaze or facial expression . The model code NM4 stands for New Mid Four .

Conception

The NM4 is conceptually between a maxiscooter and a motorcycle.

design

The design is inspired by the manga or anime Akira . The cruiser was designed by a team of 20 to 30 year old designers. The project manager Keita Mikura describes the design with the words:

"Our intention was to make something that makes every moment feel cinematic."

"Our intention was to create something that makes every moment cinematic."

The facet-like surfaces give the Vultus an avant-garde look that resembles a stealth airplane or a Lamborghini Aventador . The technoid-futuristic design is intended to appeal to new target groups, according to Honda they want to get “young, social media- engaged city dwellers” excited about the motorcycle.

construction

Chassis , chassis, brake system, engine and dual clutch transmission come from the NC series. The large scooter Honda NC 750D Integra (RC71) serves as the basis for the Honda NM4 Vultus.

drive

The NM4 is powered by the revised motor from the NC750 series. The liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 40.3  kW (54.8  hp ) and a maximum torque of 68 Nm at a speed of 4,750 min −1 from a displacement of 745 cm³ . The two cylinders have a bore of 77 mm in diameter. The piston stroke of the long stroke is 80 mm with a compression ratio of 10.7: 1. It is based on the engine from the small Honda Jazz car , which has been reduced to two cylinders and optimized for use in a motorcycle. A double clutch transmission with six gears is installed as standard.

The fuel consumption in the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) is 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The fuel tank has a capacity of 11.6 liters.

Headlights, taillights and indicators are designed using LED technology . The displays in the cockpit can be illuminated in 25 different colors.

The Vultus is produced in two versions, the NM4-01 in "Mat Ballistic Black Metallic" (matt black) and the NM4-02 in "Pearl Glare White" (white) with side cases.

landing gear

The NM4 has a diamond- shaped lattice frame made of steel tubes . The engine is a load-bearing element. The 18-inch front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 43 mm standpipe diameter and 125 mm travel. The steering head angle is 57 degrees, the caster 110 mm. The permissible total weight is 425 kg. The 17-inch rear wheel is mounted on a two-arm swing arm made of aluminum, which is dampened by a central spring strut .

A disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm on the front wheel is decelerated by a double-piston brake caliper. A disc brake with a diameter of 240 mm and single-piston caliper works on the rear wheel. The brakes are supported by a standard anti-lock braking system .

Reviews

“The suspension is soft and the wheelbase is quite long at 1645 mm, which means stable handling but is a bit at the expense of maneuverability. Likewise, the lean angle is limited, and you soon let it go with rabid curve-sharpening, put your feet on the comfortable running boards and enjoy the pleasant, comfortable and deep seating position. "

“Other recent design accidents disappeared from the portfolio fairly quickly due to continued unsuccessfulness. We only remember the rune or the DN-01 . Both are hardly remembered. And it remains to be seen whether young people, of all people, are into such a funky design and help the NM4 Vultus to be a sales success. "

“Sadly, the eye-catching bodywork is equally inefficient. Despite its width, the fairing protects neither hands nor legs fully and holds mirrors that show mostly the rider's forearm. The low, non-adjustable screen merely generates loud turbulence. [...] Honda deserves credit for encouraging its designers to create such a radical machine, and bringing it to production. But it's difficult to see who, apart from affluent Batman fans, will buy it. "

“Unfortunately, the conspicuous body is relatively impractical. Despite its width, the panel does not fully protect hands or legs, and most of the exterior mirrors only show the driver's forearms. The low, non-adjustable windshield only creates loud turbulence. […] Honda deserves credit for encouraging its designers to develop such a radical machine and then produce it. But it's hard to see who should buy them besides wealthy Batman fans. "
