IC 3356 is an irregular galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Im in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 47 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 950 .
The galaxies IC 3331 , IC 3346 , IC 3358 , IC 3381 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Royal Harwood Frost on May 7, 1904 .
