Ion Iulian "Ionuț" Panait (born May 5, 1981 in Mizil , Prahova County ) is a Romanian wrestler . In 2008 he was vice European champion in the Greco-Roman style in lightweight.

Career

Ionuț Panait began wrestling as a teenager in 1991. Since joining the police, he has been a member of the Dinamo Bucharest sports club . He is a police officer. He wrestles exclusively in the Greco-Roman style and is trained by Niculae Zamfir. Since 2007 he has been wrestling for SV Germania Weingarten in the German Bundesliga, where he is very successful. Since 2017 Iount Panait has been wrestling for Germania Weingarten in the newly founded German Wrestling League .

As a junior he reached a good 4th place in the Junior World Championships in Maribor in 1997 in the weight class up to 52 kg and at the 1998 European Junior Championships in Tirana in the weight class up to 56 kg and thus narrowly missed a medal win on both occasions .

Although he clearly dominated as a senior in the lightweight class in Romania , the transition to the senior at international championships proved difficult for Ionuț Panait. It took him several years to get good results at these championships. In 2004 he came in 7th place at the European Championships in Haparanda with three wins and one defeat against Frenchman Michael Beyer. However , he did not qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

In 2005 he came at the European Championships in Varna after victories over Yuri Kaliaschnew from Belarus and Tiziano Corriga from Italy and a defeat against Jimmy Samuelsson from Sweden on the 8th place.

In 2008 he succeeded in winning the first medal at an international championship at the European Championships in Tampere . He was there with victories over Alexei Dschakonow, Lithuania , Tiziano Corriga a. Plamen Petrow from Bulgaria and a defeat against Armen Wardanjan from the Ukraine Vice European Champion. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , for which he had qualified with this success, he was defeated in his first fight against the Chinese Li Yanyan very narrowly on points (0: 2 rounds with a 3: 3 point tie) and only came in 13th . At the 2009 European Championships in Vilnius , he defeated the lightweight Juri Weschew from Israel and Ismail Navarro Sanchez from Spain and then lost in the quarter-finals against Damian Zuba from Poland . Since this did not reach the final, Ionuț Panait dropped out and took 8th place.
