history
Isle au Haut got its name from Samuel de Champlain , who reached the islands of Penobscot Bay in 1604. "Au Haut" means "high island" and the name goes back to the fact that he and later Captain John Smith considered Isle au Haut to be the highest island in Penobscot Bay. Settlement started in 1792 when Peletiah Barter and his brothers Henry and William were the first to settle on Isle au Haut.
The Town Isle au Haut was organized as an independent town on February 28, 1874, previously the area belonged to the Town Deer Isle. In 1913 the town, which initially belonged to Lincoln County until 1786, was assigned to Knox County by Hancock County.
Even before Champlain reached and explored Penobscot Bay and Isle au Haut on his voyage of discovery in 1604, Indians used the islands. Mussel beds on the beaches are evidence of this use. Around 1880 Isle au Haut was also opened up for tourism as a summer resort and a summer colony was founded. Part of the island was donated to the state of Maine in 1943 and that land is now part of Acadia National Park. The other half of the island is owned by private owners. About 7000 guests reach the island in summer.
