The Jacob-Grimm-Schule ( JGS for short ) is an upper-level high school named after the linguist and fairy tale collector Jacob Grimm who worked in Kassel and is located at the beginning of Wilhelmshöher Allee in the city center of the north Hessian city of Kassel. Only grades 11, 12 and 13 are taught at the purely upper-level high school. The year width is about 250 students, so a total of about 750 students are taught. The school is one of the schools with the largest number of years in Hessen. Therefore, there is a wide range of advanced courses , including music , art , French and geography .
A certain level of recognition from Kassel became the school when the weekly newspaper The time six graduates of the high school in her published in May 2005 study guide 2005 presented in a twelve-page text. The wide range of options for advanced courses is one of the reasons why many students visit the Jacob-Grimm-Schule.
School history
In 1869 the facility was founded as a secondary school for girls and in 1885 it was renamed the secondary school for girls. In 1911 it developed into a Lyceum with Oberlyzeum and in 1923 into an Oberlyzeum. In 1938 the secondary school for girls was named Jacob-Grimm-Schule, even though Jacob Grimm had attended the neighboring Friedrichsgymnasium . During the Federal Garden Show in 1955 , on the occasion of which the documenta art exhibition was initiated in Kassel , a so-called school tree park was set up on the school grounds. In 1970 the Jacob-Grimm-Schule became a coeducational school through the admission of boys , and in 1981 it became a purely upper school. As early as 1970 which was at the Jacob Grimm school as one of the first facilities in Hesse Leistungskurs model of school reform introduced. The director of the school is Arnulf Hill, who replaced the long-time headmaster Norbert Greib in 2002.
Schools of origin and admission
The school is linked to the Heinrich Schütz School , which teaches up to the 10th grade. However, pupils also come to the JGS from other schools, both from comprehensive schools , for example the reform school Kassel , and from grammar schools. The basic qualification takes place through the acquisition of the "transition 11" in the 10th grade, ie the transfer from the 10th to the 11th grade. The final selection of students from schools that are not part of the association is made by the directorate of the Jacob-Grimm-Schule. Both school performance and extracurricular commitment count here. In recent times, students from other Kassel residents, who are also taking the Abitur from leading high schools, have switched to the Jacob Grimm School after the 10th grade.
Projects and offers
Youth Future Conference
The Youth Future Conference has been an annual event since 2000, at which pupils from all Kassel schools are invited to topic-related learning and debating. Guests at the work-oriented conference were Günter Grass , Klaus Hurrelmann , Horst-Eberhard Richter , Rolf Hochhuth and Matthias Berninger , who met the students in workshops, discussions and readings. While the conference was initially organized outside of the classroom, it has now been integrated into a working group.
School newspapers
For a long time, the school newspaper neo appeared at the Jacob-Grimm-Schule , which has won several first prizes from the news magazine Der Spiegel and national competitions. The internet magazine streitBar.org emerged from neo and was honored with the renowned Axel Springer Prize from the Axel Springer Verlag in 2005 .
In 2007, the student magazine founded effect: . In the three issues published in 07/08, it tried to differentiate itself from other school newspapers with its quality standards and relied on a wide range of content, from socially critical articles to first-time publications by young JGS authors.
UKULALA project
With the UKULALA project, the school supports the Village Pioneer Project , a training and development project in Nigeria . The support consists mainly of regular collection campaigns. In addition, internships are offered in which a student works on the project in Nigeria for several months.

Several working groups (chemistry, biology, geography) took part very successfully in the youth research school competition. In sports competitions as well as in youth training for the Olympics and Europe-wide projects such as Comenius , students also achieved prizes. Schoolchildren are regularly accepted into the program of the German National Academic Foundation . The school has its own boathouse on the banks of the Fulda , which has been maintained in close cooperation by the Jacob Grimm School's rowing club (RVJGS) for over 30 years.
