James Ross Strait is a strait in the Arctic Ocean . It lies between King William Island and the Boothia Peninsula in the Canadian territory of Nunavut .
The strait is 180 km long and 48 and 64 km wide. It connects the Larsen Sound in the north with the St. Roch Basin in the south.
There are several islands in James Ross Strait, including the Clarence Islands , Tennent Island, and Matty Island .
Several polar explorers, including Roald Amundsen , sailed the James Ross Strait in search of the Northwest Passage . The strait was named after the explorer and navigator James Clark Ross .
