Johann Friedrich Wilhelm von Müffling (born May 14, 1742 in Holzhausen ; † December 9, 1808 in Neisse ) was a Prussian major general and chief of Infantry Regiment No. 49 .

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm was the son of Karl Friedrich von Müffling (* December 1, 1707 in Wandersleben ; † October 4, 1780 in Günthersleben ), major in the Altenburg regional regiment and knight of the Order of St. John , and his wife Anna Dorothea, born von Selzer from the house Eckstedt (born December 4, 1703 in Berkhausen, † May 23, 1790 in Mühlberg).

Military career

From 1755, Müffling was initially a Junker in the Leibregiment in Gotha . On March 3, 1758, he transferred to Prussian service and was employed in Infantry Regiment No. 3 . With the regiment, Müffling took part in the battles near Kay , Liegnitz , the battles near Adelsbach and Leutmannsdorf and the sieges of Dresden and Schweidnitz during the 1758/63 campaign. In the meantime he had become second lieutenant on May 10, 1761 . In the post-war years he was promoted to captain and company commander in his regiment until February 2, 1776, and finally became a major on December 8, 1786 . As such, he took part in the campaign in Holland the following year . Here he commanded the fusilier battalion "von Langelair" No. 17 and was awarded the order Pour le Mérite for the battle near Amstelveen on October 1, 1787 . On January 20, 1789, Müffling became chief of the fusilier battalion “von Wilhelmi” No. 18, with which he fought against revolutionary France in the 1792/95 campaign . It was used in the cannonade of Valmy , the battle of Kaiserslautern and the battles near Waldalgesheim , Weidenthal , Edinghofen, Pallenberg and La Lune. During the campaign, as a lieutenant colonel , on September 12, 1794, on the occasion of the storming of the Battenberg , he was given command of the 12th Infantry Regiment "von Kleist" . One year after his promotion to colonel , he took over the infantry regiment "von Thadden" No. 3 on January 4, 1796, in which he had started his service in the Prussian army.

In recognition of his service during the campaign against France Müffling early March 1797 to Amtshauptmann of Spandau with an annual allowance of 500 taler appointed. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. finally handed him on October 2, 1800 the infantry regiment "von Schönfeldt" No. 49 and appointed Müffling on May 20, 1801 with a patent from June 9, 1801 to major general.

When mobilization in 1806, Müffling and his regiment belonged to the Hohenlohe Corps . In the same year he was seriously wounded during the battle of Jena and lost an eye. After the Prussian defeat he was brought to Silesia , where he died of his injuries two years later.

Müffling had married Christiane Charlotte Wilhelmine von Borschitten (born December 16, 1743 in Möbisburg ; † September 30, 1796 in Prenzlau ) in 1774 . The following children were born from the marriage:
