Johann Georg von Hohenzollern
Johann Georg Carl Leopold Eitel-Friedrich Meinrad Maria Hubertus Michael Prince of Hohenzollern , called Hansi , (born July 31, 1932 in Sigmaringen ; † March 2, 2016 in Munich ) was a German art historian . From 1991 to 1998 he was general director of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen , previously director of the Bavarian National Museum and then director of the art gallery of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich.

Johann Georg was a son of Friedrich von Hohenzollern and Margarete Carola Wilhelmine of Saxony. He had six siblings, including the brothers Ferfried and Friedrich Wilhelm , who was head of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen house until his death in September 2010 .
education and profession
Johann Georg attended more than ten schools before he graduated from high school. After dropping out of medical school, he studied art history and classical archeology in Paris , Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich between 1955 and 1964 . He was in Munich in 1964 with a thesis on the King Galleries French Cathedrals Dr. phil. PhD.
From 1966 he worked for the Bavarian State Painting Collections . At first he was a specialist librarian for Spanish and French painting, later he became deputy general director. Since 1986 he has been General Director of the Bavarian National Museum . During his tenure there were various large exhibition projects and the acquisition of Fritz Thyssen's art collection .
In 1991 he returned to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen as general director. He wanted to open this up more to the outside world, and he also advocated cooperation with other institutions such as the art gallery of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung . During his activity, the Haus der Kunst was renovated and the renovation of the Alte Pinakothek began. The new building of the Pinakothek der Moderne took place under his direction . In 1998 he retired. Then he took over the management of the art gallery of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung until 2006.

family
On May 25, 1961, Johann Georg married Princess Birgitta of Sweden , the daughter of Gustav Adolf, the Hereditary Prince of Sweden , and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duchess of Saxony, in the royal palace of Stockholm . She is the sister of the future King Carl Gustaf . The church wedding took place on July 30, 1961 in the parish church of St. Johann-Evangelist in Sigmaringen. In 1990 the couple separated but stayed married. The princess lives in Mallorca.
