Johann Joseph Abert , also Jan Josef Abert (born September 20, 1832 in Kochowitz (Kochovice) near Gastorf (Hoštka) ( Bohemia ); † April 1, 1915 in Stuttgart ) was a German-Bohemian composer , conductor and double bass player .

Life

Johann Joseph Aberts was the master mason Wenzel Abert. At the age of ten he came to the Augustinian monastery in Bohemian-Leipa . Here he received literary lessons for four years. In 1846 he began to study at the Prague Conservatory . He received instrumental lessons from the double bass player Josef Hrabě . Johann Friedrich Kittl , the director of the conservatory, gave him composition lessons and August Wilhelm Ambros lessons in music theory. While still at the conservatory, he composed his first two overtures in 1848 and 1849. The symphony in B minor followed in 1851. He conducted the work when he was leaving the Conservatory. In 1853 he was engaged as a double bass player in the court orchestra in Stuttgart under Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner . The symphony in C minor followed in 1854, which Lindpaintner conducted in Stuttgart. In 1856 he wrote the 3rd symphony in A major and dedicated the jubilee overture to Emperor Franz-Joseph I. For this he received a brilliant ring from the emperor. He worked at the Stuttgart Opera from 1867 to 1888 as court conductor and was a successful composer. The morning after the premiere of his opera Astorga , which had taken place on May 20, 1866, the King of Württemberg , who had attended the premiere, had him called to personally appoint him Royal Music Director.

His works, including several operas and seven symphonies , found great recognition at home and abroad during his time. He also composed songs and chamber music . His musical legacy is in the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart and partly in the German Literature Archive in Marbach . Numerous works by Abert, including the Columbus Symphony, two double bass concerts, overtures, his string quartet, piano pieces, songs and his mass have appeared in concert halls in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and the USA and in some cases on the radio in recent years Television to reruns.

His son Hermann Abert (1871–1927), professor of musicology in Halle, Leipzig and Berlin, published in 1919/1921 - based on Otto Jahn's monograph WA Mozart  - a “revised and expanded edition” that is still often quoted and the first to be published Mozart's biography which has grown in his own scientific and artistic exhibition applies. His granddaughter Anna Amalie Abert (1906–1996), professor of musicology in Kiel, carried on her father's legacy. a. with history of the opera , 1994.

Abert transposed the prelude into the key of D minor and linked it to the organ fugue. In between he put a chorale composed by himself in the style of Bach.
