The city was founded in the late 6th century BC. Chr. As a colony by Doric Greeks from Heraclea Pontica (in turn daughter city Megaras ) named Kallatis founded.

Today Mangalia is a health resort and destination for sea vacationers. The city is also home to the oldest surviving mosque in Romania and an archaeological museum. In the newly built Hotel President you can visit interesting excavations of the ancient city in the basement.

The city's largest industrial company is the Mangalia shipyard . The shipyard specializes in the conversion and repair of cargo ships and has a capacity of six newly built ships up to Panamax size and up to forty ship repairs per year.
