Kalná Roztoka (until 1927 "Kalné"; Hungarian Kálnarosztoka ) is a municipality in Okres Snina ( Prešovský kraj ) in the far east of Slovakia with 536 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the traditional Zemplín landscape .

The municipality is located in the southern part of the Bukovské vrchy Mountains in the headwaters of the Ublianka River , near the state border with Ukraine . North of the village, near the main ridge of the Nastaz mountain range , you will find the Havešová primeval beech forest , which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 as part of the transnational “ Primeval Beech Forests in the Carpathian Mountains ”. The center of the village is at an altitude of 286  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Snina .

Neighboring municipalities are Stakčínska Roztoka in the north, Kolbasov in the northeast, Klenová in the east and south, Kolonica in the southwest and Stakčín in the west.

Today's community consists of Kalná and Kalná Roztoka, which merged after the middle of the 19th century.

Kalná Roztoka was first mentioned in writing as Kalna Rostoka in 1568 and belonged to the Humenné estate ; in the 18th century it was owned by the Szirmay and Dernath families . In 1720 13 households lived in the village, in 1787 the village had 30 houses and 182 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 30 houses and 237 inhabitants who were employed as charcoal burners and forest workers.

Kalná was first mentioned in writing as Kalna in 1554 and, like Kalná Roztoka, belonged to the Humenné estate. In the 18th century the village was owned by the Szirmay family . In 1787 the village had 53 houses and 392 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 48 houses and 381 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. As a result of the Slovak-Hungarian War , the village belonged again to Hungary from 1939 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Kalná Roztoka had 562 residents, including 292 Slovaks , 214 Russians , 28 Roma , six Ukrainians and three Czechs . 19 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

356 residents committed themselves to the Orthodox Church, 174 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 18 residents to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Evangelical Church AB and the Pentecostal movement. Two residents were without a denomination and the denomination of nine residents has not been determined.
