Kolonica (Hungarian Kiskolon - until 1907 Kolonica ) is a municipality in Okres Snina ( Prešovský kraj ) in the extreme east of Slovakia with 556 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the traditional Zemplín landscape .
geography
The municipality is located between the Vihorlat mountains to the west and the Bukovské vrchy to the northeast , in the valley of the Kolonička brook , which belongs to the Cirocha catchment area . The municipality is quite mountainous and mostly covered by forests. The soils in the area consist of flysch . The center of the village is at an altitude of 360 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Snina .
Neighboring municipalities are Stakčín in the west and north, Kalná Roztoka in the northeast, Klenová in the east and Ladomirov in the south.
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1567 as Klanica and was part of the territory of Humenné , later the village was owned by the Szirmay dynasty and in the 19th century by the Lobkovicz family . In 1720 the village had a mill, 19 abandoned and 12 inhabited households, in 1828 there were 99 houses and 734 inhabitants who were employed as shepherds and forest workers in the surrounding forests. Between 1890 and 1910, and also in the first Czechoslovak Republic, many residents emigrated.
Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. As a result of the Slovak-Hungarian War , the village belonged again to Hungary from 1939 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Kolonica had 582 residents, including 475 Slovaks , 92 Russians , three Czechs and two Ukrainians . 10 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
450 residents committed to the Greek Catholic Church, 64 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, 33 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 14 residents to the Orthodox Church, two residents to the Evangelical Church AB; one resident professed a different denomination. 13 residents had no denomination and the denomination of five residents was not determined.
