Clash of the Leprechauns - The Legend of a Forbidden Love (Original title: The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns ) is a two-part American fantasy television film directed by John Henderson from 1999 . In Germany it was broadcast for the first time on April 2, 2000 on RTL . The story is reminiscent of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in many ways .

action

The American businessman Jack Woods wants to spend a quiet vacation in the small, sleepy Irish town of Carrick and rents a house there. He is overworked and would like to use the holidays to finally find himself again. While taking a walk, he surprises the beautiful Kathleen Fitzpatrick while nude bathing in the lake. Kathleen is outraged and scares him off, but Jack immediately falls in love with her.

That evening Jack was helping himself to the strong Irish whiskey when suddenly a goblin appeared to him. When he is sober again, he naturally wants to pursue this event and looks for the little man, whom he promptly finds in the nearby river, calling for help. On the spur of the moment, Jack pulls the goblin out of the water and saves his life, because water is the only thing that can endanger the otherwise immortal goblins. Seamus Muldoon - the name of the rescued one - becomes Jack's new friend and introduces him to the fabulous world of goblins.

The fairies take care of nature , the goblins, on the other hand, like to play jokes and prefer to argue with the hated castle fairies . There has been little friction between the peoples for ages, but there must never be a war, so the Great Banshee - mistress of all magical beings - decided.

Jack gets used to the little creatures with whom he shares the house very quickly and gets to know Kathleen better through them, although her four brothers are very much against the relationship.

In search of fun, Muldoon's son Mickey and his friends Sean Devine and the brothers Jericho and Barney O'Grady sneak in disguised at a festival of the castle fairies. Mickey falls in love with the beautiful fairy princess Jessica, the only daughter of Fairy King Boric and Queen Morag. Jessica recognizes who and what Mickey is, but she too quickly discovers her deep feelings for the goblin. But it is an impossible love that is threatened on all sides.

When the fairies discover the goblins, Jessica and her governess Lady Margret are taken to the elves' underwater castle. But Mickey, who can now fly for sheer love, finds her and flees with Jessica into the swamps to his uncle Sir Jantee, the master of the butter ghosts. However, these beings do everything for butter and also betray the lovers for this price. The escape of Jessica and Mickey has made the situation between fairies and goblins even more tense, because both parties accuse themselves of being to blame for the situation. The great banshee is so displeased with this that she exposes the immortality of fairies and elves. Mickey's friend Sean is killed.

Jack and Kathleen also notice something of this situation, because nature is starting to play completely crazy. In the middle of summer it starts to snow and torrential rain. The elves lack the care that Mother Nature slowly dies. The two decide to help Mickey and Jessica and accompany them to the big banshee, so that it gives the creatures their immortality back and calms the situation down again. But the company fails.

The war comes to a head, but Jack and Kathleen are not all right either, because she finds out that he should buy Cerrick and the surrounding land for his company and turn it into a vacation paradise for overworked Americans. Jack has long since given up on this plan, but Kathleen doesn't believe a word he says anymore.

As the situation escalates, Mickey and Jessica decide on a radical plan. They get a poison from the butter spirits , which temporarily kills them, as well as the antidote. If their parents are unwilling to see it, they threaten to kill themselves. With no one responding, they act on their threat while Jack moves the divided parties to peace. After much back and forth, Muldoon and Boric finally give in and make up. Kathleen is now supposed to give the two lovers the antidote , but hasty action by the warlord General Bulstrode prevents that. His attack tunnel causes Kathleen's car to tip over and the vial with the antidote breaks. Only the Big Banshee can save everything now. In return, however, it demands that the two peoples make peace and their leaders shake hands. The Big Banshee rescues Mickey and Jessica and brings back all the dead goblins and fairies.

In the end, Mickey and Jessica are allowed to marry with all friends. There is peace between the castle fairies and the goblins, and everything is fine again between Jack and Kathleen too.

characters

The goblins

The Kerry goblins are a fierce bunch under the leadership of Seamus Muldoon. The only purpose in life is to have fun. That's why they like to fall out of trees, dance and get drunk with whiskey. Also, people need to gutstellen with them, otherwise they play them tricks and scare as their sheep . Rumor has it that you have to catch them to get their legendary gold pot, but no one has ever got a gold pot from them.

The castle fairies

The fairies live on a huge flying castle that they can enter using their wings or toad bladders . They are very careful about etiquette and courteous behavior, and place the utmost importance on titles. The fairies are ruled by King Boric. Your most important task is to guard nature and the regular course of the seasons . If they neglect these tasks, nature threatens to die.

The butter ghosts

The butter ghosts live in the marshland and are just as big as the fairies and goblins to which they are closely related. Their overall behavior is very English and Jantee in particular keeps making hints that the butter spirits come from this country. The name of this species is derived from its predilection for butter , regardless of its origin. They do everything for a piece of butter and betray friends and enemies to get hold of this delicacy.

The forest guards

The forest guards guard and protect the forest.

Others

Emma Townshend, who has the "Fly Away" song written for the wedding scene and singing, is the daughter of The Who - frontman Pete Townshend . King Boric is played by the band's lead singer , Roger Daltrey .

Colm Meaney was best known in the character of the transporter chief and chief engineer Miles O'Brien in the television series Starship Enterprise - The Next Century and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Clash of the Leprechauns was the last film directed by Michael Williams , husband of actress Judi Dench .

The church scene in the middle of the film has a translation error in the German version that almost twisted the entire message of the film. A woman says: “The castle fairies no longer care about nature!”, While in the original she speaks of the castle fairies and the goblins, which should show that nature needs both forces, “order and chaos”.

Awards

In 2000 the film won a Saturn Award and was also nominated for an Emmy .

Reviews

“Two-part fantasy miniseries in a German-American co-production that meets television standards, but looks behind the times in terms of tricks. The book and the technical processing of the transformed 'Romeo and Juliet' material leave a lot to be desired in places. "

“Funny kitsch. [...] The amusing fairy tale from the Irish magical world has only one downer: the exaggerated mood folklore, topped by a " Riverdance " quilted inlay in the Kobold tavern. [...] Hearty creatures, cheerful colors: Anyone who loves the dark side of fairy tales will get a stomachache with this amusement park fantasy. But it is nicely played and decorated. "
