The Dubai Desert Classic is an annual professional golf tournament which takes place in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates . It has been an integral part of the European Tour since its inauguration in 1989 and was the first event on the tour to be held in the Middle East . The tournament was mostly organized on the "Majlis" course at the Emirates Golf Club , with the exception of the years 1999 and 2000, when they played at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club .
The event is known for attracting the biggest stars in the golf world, who are also attracted with generous inaugural salaries. The most successful so far has been Ernie Els , who won the Desert Classic three times. The main sponsors of the tournament are Dubai and Omega (since 2010), the secondary sponsors include Mercedes-Benz , National Bank of Dubai , Jumeirah Golf Estates , CNN , Emaar , Emirates Airlines and Gulf News .
