Katzelsdorf is a street village in the northeastern Weinviertel in Lower Austria between Reintal and Schrattenberg near the state border with the Czech Republic . The place is a cadastral community of Bernhardsthal ( Mistelbach district ).

geography

Katzelsdorf is located at 203 m on a branch road to the northwest of the Lundenburger Straße (B 47) leading from Wilfersdorf to Břeclav . The place covers an area of 12.59 km² in the middle of a gentle landscape of hills and ponds. From the central, triangular square, the mostly closed, ascending main street of the village and the side streets lead off. Numerous press houses , fields , vineyards and acacia forests shape the townscape. The parish church, visible from afar, stands on a hill in the northeast . In the southwest there are two ponds , the smaller community pond and the large pond with the Mühlbach as a tributary. The Marterberg rises on the northern edge of the village.

history

Katzelsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1050, in 1393 purchases by Johann I, Herr zu Nikolsburg and Feldsberg in “Kätzelsdorf” are documented. In 1683 Katzelsdorf became its own parish , after it had previously been part of the Feldsberg (Valtice) parish .

Near the Katzelsdorfer Wald, on the way between Feldsberg and Katzelsdorf, the hunting lodge Katzelsdorf was built at the beginning of the 19th century by Johann II of Liechtenstein , but it was torn away during the Cold War when the Iron Curtain was built in the 1950s. In 1864, 108 buildings went up in flames in a major fire, and in 1869 21 houses were destroyed by fire. In the same year fields and barns were flooded, crops were destroyed and cattle were killed in storms.

After the Treaty of Saint Germain after the First World War, parts of the municipality, especially the Katzelsdorfer Wald, fell to Czechoslovakia , although the municipality, like the neighboring municipality of Feldsberg, had always belonged to Lower Austria.

In 1927 the inn was rebuilt, the local road paved and the dirt road to Schrattenberg paved towards the road. In 1949 Katzelsdorf was supplied with electricity.

In 1971 the communities of Bernhardsthal, Katzelsdorf and Reintal were merged to form the large community of Bernhardsthal.

On December 21, 2007, the Schengen Agreement opened the border with the Czech Republic and the border bar that had marked the border with Czechoslovakia that had existed since 1918 and was part of the hermetically sealed iron curtain after 1945 was removed. Since then, the border with the Czech Republic can be crossed at any point without border control.

politics

Katzelsdorf is represented by three representatives (2 ÖVP , 1 SPÖ ) in the Bernhardsthal municipal council. The mayor is Johann Kreutzer, who is also Vice Mayor of Bernhardsthal.
