Vallecitos ( English Vallecitos Nuclear Generating Station ) is the first commercially used nuclear power plant in the USA and has a boiling water reactor . The nuclear power plant is located 30 miles east of San Francisco in the US state of California .

history

The reactor in Vallecitos is a boiling water reactor built by General Electric . The owner and operator was also General Electric. Construction officially began on January 1, 1956, and the reactor was commissioned on October 19, 1957. The reactor was also used to train operators for the Dresden nuclear power plant .

The reactor was a joint project between General Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric and the Bechtel Corporation . It was shut down in 1963.

A small research reactor with a maximum output of 100 kW is still in operation on the site . There are also laboratories for metallurgical analyzes of irradiated materials and for the production of radioactive preparations for medicine and industry.
