License plate (Palestinian Territories)
Palestinian license plates were introduced in 1994 and are issued by the Palestinian Authority, which wascreated in the same year. Originally, the signs were used in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip . In 2012, however, the administration there introduced new license plates in the Gaza Strip.
Vehicles with Palestinian license plates can only be driven by Palestinians. Israeli or East Jerusalem identity card holders and foreign nationals are given Israeli license numbers . These can then also be on the move in the Israeli heartland. In the West Bank, too, certain roads are reserved for vehicles with yellow license plates. Initially, many vehicles stolen in Israel with yellow number plates were circulating in Palestinian cities. These were then not legally registered and were traveling without insurance. Israeli soldiers and Palestinian special police officers specifically stop such vehicles.

Palestinian license plates consist mainly of numbers based on the pattern 1-2345-67, with the first number providing information about the exact origin of the vehicle. After a separation, there is a consecutive four-digit serial number and two further digits, some of which provide information about the type of vehicle or, in earlier versions, the year of manufacture. On the right side there is a Latin P for Palestine and also in Arabic script aفfor filist . In the early editions, the order of both characters was reversed. Private vehicles have white number plates with green letters. US-size signs are single-line without a "P" or separator.
The numbers are assigned when the vehicle is first registered. As a result, the number remains with the vehicle, even if the owner changes.

Public transport
Public transport vehicles (taxis, shared taxis and buses) have green license plates with white text. Taxis end with 30.
Identification of the authorities
Official vehicles use white license plates with red letters. These include government cars, ambulances, post office vehicles, the PBC radio station as well as the fire brigade and special police (military). These numbers are assigned consecutively in the format 1234 with or without leading zeros.
Police license plate
Palestinian police vehicles originally had red license plates with white text. Today the police also use the reverse color sequence. Recently, new police vehicles have been registered with regular number plates (white on green) ending with 99.
Trial license plate
Trial license plates for workshops and car dealers are blue with white letters and show the word "TEST" in Arabic (اختبار) and Hebrew ( במבחן) Writing above the number. In the first version the text was only available in Latin script, newer signs show the English word ON TEST . The numbers also have seven digits, but the format 12-345-67 and also show a schematic representation of the coat of arms of Palestine .
New license plates in the Gaza Strip in 2012
In spring 2012, new license plates with black letters on a white background were introduced in the Gaza Strip. The basic structure of seven digits was retained, the 3 is still used as the first digit. The original P on the right has been replaced with a vertical Palestinian flag . In addition, labels with blue and green letters are also used.
Old Israeli license plates until 1994
Before the introduction of their own Palestinian license plates, the license plates were issued by the Israeli civil administration. Blue number plates were assigned in the West Bank and white in the Gaza Strip. On the left they showed a Hebrew letter in a white box that indicated the district. The color of the field was changed from white to orange during the First Intifada because of the tax boycott. A new car number was only given to those who had paid the outstanding tax liability.

Trivia
In the Gaza Strip there are still white boards with black numbers and an Arabic M (م). Officially, these are limited approvals due to missing papers, etc. In the vernacular, however, this M stands for mafruq (Arabic for: stolen), because most of the vehicles are stolen in Israel. The owners of such numbers have to pay higher taxes. Since many Palestinians are still dependent on these vehicles, this curiosity has not been abolished.
